Very helpful and highly underrated book

I was unsure whether or not to buy this book because 99% of the reviews were from the Amazon "Vine" program and they are all basically fake five star reviews where you can tell the person hasn't ever looked at the book before reviewing it. However, I'm really glad I bought it and think those reviews do a huge disservice to the book because it has actually been really helpful. So here is an actual verified purchase review. One note: you should already be at 45+ in quant before you use this book or it won't be helpful.

The content itself is good at pushing you to the next level of "thinking" and make you better on your feet in completing tough problems in under 2 minutes. They do cover some new ground which I was really surprised wasn't covered in the main 5 Manhattan Prep guides or even in the in-classroom course I took. For example, my weakest area was inequalities and absolute values in data sufficiency and the strategies in Chapter 4 on approaching those (e.g. creating multiple threads of "If |a|0, then...") changed it so I actually look forward to these problems now. There aren't necessarily many new areas that are covered but the book helps you rethink what problems are really asking. For example, it shifts your understanding of remainder problems as pattern recognition problems or various inequalities as positives/negatives. I also feel a lot more comfortable using Smart Numbers, Testing Cases, and Working Backwards strategies. These are taught in the other guides but I always felt like they weren't really necessary because you're never forced to use them on really tough problems where other methods are impractical. However, I do feel like the guessing strategies aren't really that helpful and can be skimmed.

The best part of the book is the 700-800 range only practice problems at the end of each chapter and 150 more in the back across all topics. They're all as tough as the 700-800 level problems that show up on the Manhattan CATs and great at preparing you. I recommend running a 20 minute timer on each of the 10 problem sets in the back of the book to do the problems under real time constraints and spending more time on reviewing the problems afterwards.

Overall, I would say I'm very happy with my progress thanks to this book. I'm still preparing for the GMAT but this book has definitely lifted me beyond my score plateau and I feel a lot more comfortable when taking a practice CAT now and to eventually getting to my target score.

Good Strategy Guide, but Poor Editing

This book has some very good chapters on different strategies and advanced techniques for solving GMAT quantitative problems. It was recommended by the Advanced 3 Month Study Plan on Magoosh.com. The problems are much more challenging than many of the problems in the GMAT Official Guide, and for this reason the Manhattan Prep GMAT Advanced Quant book is useful.

I am constantly surprised by the large number of typos in this book. It's frustrating to work through a problem, look up the solution, and then realize the problem contained a typo. On several occasions, a variable should have been an exponent in superscript, when it was actually printed in standard font. This kind of error totally changes the definition of the problem. I really question how carefully the editors of this book reviewed it and it's hard for me to believe that any professional publication could contain so many errors.

Had I known this going in, I still would have purchased the book for the extra practice problems and the strategies as they are quite valuable.

An excellent quant strategy guide, but add the Roadmap ...

Years ago when I took the GRE, the formula was simple: I knew my stuff and simply took the test. Now doing well on graduate-level entrance exams is a must because admittance to the school of one’s choice is a bit more critical that it used to be. I had a guaranteed job, but they simply aren’t out there any more. People are studying as if their lives depend on it because on one level, it does. The only guarantee many have these days is a pile of debt.

Many text discuss a lot of practical matters and those are essentials everyone will need to know. You can’t bring a calculator into the testing area and the cost of taking the GMAT is $250. If you are looking for this sort of guidance I’d suggest picking up the Manhattan Prep GMAT Roadmap: Expert Advice Through Test Day. This is an excellent guide or roadmap that will help anyone wend their way through the process. This is one book I’d definitely recommend whether you are a Manhattan Prep aficionado or no.

This is an intense strategy book. Each chapter revisits mathematical concepts or areas you’ll need to know. There’s an overview, but later on in chapter four you’ll learn to distinguish “between solution strategies and guessing tactics.” For me this is an important chapter and one I’d pore over. There numerous sidebars and charts that help one visualize strategies, work through formulas, patterns, etc. I find all of this type of material to be extremely helpful.

Of course for many it’s the opportunity to work through many type of problems that will show up on the GMAT. Step-by-step solutions help with learning how to instinctually work through a problem. For example, I’m seeing that I can work through a problem in a couple of different ways (obviously), but one is recommended over another. The solutions are laid out so I can visualize the easiest and most logical path to take while working through a problem. Learning how to approach a problem is almost as important and knowing the math. This is an excellent strategy guide and in my book you can’t have too many.

About the Author
Jim Armstrong attended Harvard University as an undergraduate student and then moved to the West coast for graduate school. Since earning his Master's degree at the University of California at Berkeley, Jim has taught in the California community college system. He has been on the faculty of City College of San Francisco for the past 20 years, during which time he has taught the full range of lower-division chemistry courses, with particular emphasis on the single-term GOB course. Ten years ago, he collaborated with the CCSF biology and nursing departments on an extensive revision of the GOB curriculum, and the success of the course revision led to the writing of this textbook. Besides teaching and writing, Jim enjoys playing piano and trombone, collecting topographic maps, bird watching, and doting on his wonderful twin daughters.

Wow, horrible reading. Horrible layout. It's almost like the nutty professor wrote all these ITIL books. They make no sense and there isnt any logical progression that I can see. They touch topics all over and from different stages everywhere in the book. The absolute worst edited publication I have ever seen.

The entire ITIL 2011 series (and I have them all) are all the same.

About the Author
Mark Wigan is an artist, illustrator and academic. He was an early pioneer of trans-global club art in 1980s New York, London and Tokyo. Mark's work has evolved into a multimedia archive, chronicling the changing worlds of club culture and street style. For the past ten years, he has been lecturing worldwide and has led illustration programmes at a range of universities.

Good intentions but unimaginative writing

Having bought the entire AVA Academia range of Illustration books, I've read several of them already and know what to expect. It's a great series, however, Basics Illustration: Thinking Visually by Mark Wigan could have been easily improved with minor tweaking. Much of the information contained within is just echoed from "The Fundamentals of Illustration."

I understand that this is an 'introductory' level book, so I wasn't expecting anything life changing in it. The book has several areas where it lists further research for styles and contemporary trends in the industry. This is great; this is exactly what the book needed to deliver. The book also suggest projects for individual improvement as well as guidelines by which to judge and challenge oneself.

So why did I give it only four stars? (Really merits 3 1/2, but Amazon doesn't expressly give you that option.)

The writing seems at times lazy and cringe-inducing. Mr. Wigan is a good illustrator but is also a 'lister', and much of the text is one gigantic, unreadable, stale block of solid text with only commas for comfort. To ILLUSTRATE as it were, imagine if you were reading a 160 page book where most of the text was run-on, repetitive, redundant, listless, uninspired, overly didactic, systematic, expected, uninterrupted, rambling, dry, foreseen, bland, stale, robotic, programmed, trance-like, stagnant, blurry, unnecessary, echoing, monotonous, drivelling, homogenous, and mediocre.

To be fair, reading the last part of my review is a little too critical. It might have been the only way to condense the text, but the problem could have been more innovatively solved. This is one of the few series of books on the subject that is well developed and fairly continuous in its level of quality and visual polish. It's just the listing that marrs the title, severely, at times.

Thinking visually, but not typographically

This book is OK for inspiration thanks to its illustrations, but not very good for reading. The type setting is so poor, that your eyes get tired after reading one page. The author was thinking visually, but somehow forgot, that most books are meant to be read. This one will end up just to flip through. So, if you are thinking about buying it, look around, there are better books. Masters of Poster Design by John Foster is well worth the money for example.

Excellent first few steps into an unknown

This whole AVA book series, along with Teaching Illustration: Course Offerings and Class Projects from the Leading Graduate and Undergraduate Programs by Marshall Arisman and The Education of an Illustrator by Marshall Arisman, make for the perfect independently learning course outside of and Education Institution for a fraction of the cost to get started. One might be able to supplement the norms of education, providing one joins some of the societies and groups, as well as attend some of the conferences and museums activities. Works their backside off developing a reputation, portfolio, and countless contacts through networking. But this seems like it would need to be done in an over flooded educational system and job market anyway. Aside from that this would be beneficial to the life long animation student or artist in the sense that it will provide an awakening or rejuvenated refreshment on different ways to approach and create it. Each book provides an excellent example of project ideas to start, choose, or revise. They also have professional working examples, industry insights, and reference pictures or inspiration to boost things along. This helps rather than just dry reading.

Serves as a valuable supplement

As stated by the author, this book consists of various addenda and period sources used in the writing of DID MOSES EXIST. Most of it was interesting, although the Dionysus/MOSES chapter did get a little repetitive. About half of the book is The Epic of Gilgamesh, which I'll be reading later as part of a larger book on Mesopotamian mythology. Still, it's a great compilation and serves as a valuable supplement. Important note: a few of the sources are only presented in their original language (which means I skipped them).

No, he didn't.....

The companion book to "DID MOSES EXIST: THE MYTH OF THE ISRAELI LAW GIVER" is a helpful guide.

I knew the Gilgamesh story of several thousand years ago preceded the Moses story, but I didn't realize how much of a myth the Jews thought Moses was. Israeli archaeologists have combed the Sinai for clues of his, and some 600,000 Jews and their hungry animals, and found not the tiniest sliver of evidence that any tribe remained there for even an overnight camp out, let alone 40 years. After all of that manna from heaven in the form of doves there has to be at least thousands of tiny bones scattered about....but nothing exists.

This book is a 5 for its helpfulness.

I think a thorough study was done by the writer to come up with this book. The myths of the bible were shown just as that, myths. No evidence was found for this epoch up to date, the so claimed evidence was in most cases wish full thinking of people who wants to prove something.
Absolutely worth reading if this is what you are interesting in.

// Overpriced, hard to follow, no eText for 4th edition, inappropriate cultural references

This book is overpriced. Personally, I find the chapter very difficult to follow along with because of the strange teaching methods the authors chose to use. They show tons of incorrect examples that don't work. I suppose they think that by showing how a person might code something incorrectly you can learn from the mistakes but over all it is just really confusing when you are trying to follow along and learn. Maybe if all that had been added at the end of chapters in a "common mistakes" section or something it would have been more readable for beginners.

Most importantly, I would like to note that despite what the title says, you DO NOT GET ACCESS TO THE 4TH EDITION AS AN ETEXT. You only have access to the 3rd edition online which is useless if your professor is using this book because the pagination is completely different. The eText app also doesn't work on iPhones so if, like me, you were hoping to access the eText for reading while commuting rather than carry this beast of a book around, you are out of luck.

As a third note I think that it is important to mention that the authors seem to have thought that including inappropriate cultural references to make the programming more interesting was a great idea and it was not a great idea.

UPDATE: I had to actually buy supplemental books for my programming course just to be able to understand the material as this book was so confusing and unhelpful.

Just...OK

So, what's a poor, beleaguered Laird to do when he's out of money? He marries an heiress! Niall is the ruler of his clan, and desperately needs the infusion that Katherine's fortune will funnel his way to rebuild his clan. Katherine has lived a life of abuse at the hands of a cruel uncle, and pretty willingly starts a new life with her taciturn husband. If you're thinking this is a bit of an overused historical romance plotline, well, good thinking.

There's really nothing new in the story or the characters. Katherine's innate sweetness and selflessness makes the clan align with and accept her; Niall is a bit surly and overbearing, all due to a romantic betrayal in his past that's never fully fleshed out. He's quite mean to Katherine in several exchanges and she just takes it. Niall also accuses his brother of being a traitor at every conceivable turn, and winds up being not very likeable.

However, I did keep reading! I don't know if I'm simply hungry for another good Highlander romance or what, but I was entertained enough to finish the story. I also respect the level of editing of the book; excessive errors and grammatical issues tend to throw me right out of a decent tale. Because of that, I will definitely try another of the author's works. It wasn't the best of the genre (For me, Julie Garwood and the recent Maya Banks Highlander novels were better), but it certainly wasn't the worst!

I didn't put this down until I finished it!!

Have you ever made dinner with one hand while reading a book because you couldn't put it down? That was me last night. Draining the pasta was a bit of a challenge.

Niall MacIan doesn't trust women. However, he needs a wife with tons of money to save his clan. King David takes care of that by granting him Katherine Ruthven, a lowland heiress whose Uncle abuses.

Katherine is loved by her entire clan and she protects them anyway she can even if that means taking the blows herself.

I'm so glad that Niall found Katherine. They needed each other so much. Niall so he could learn to trust others and himself. Katherine so she would understand that with opening your heart to love, you will sometimes feel the worst hurt. But working through that hurt together leads to a love that can handle anything.

The cast of characters including Niall's brother Fingal and his elite guard are endearing. They sided with Katherine more than once against Niall. Niall and Fingal's mother is awful and causes so much havoc for Katherine. Katherine brings a young boy with her after her marriage to Niall. Tomas becomes their foster son and learns that someone wants to kill Niall.

I loved this story and really hope that this author continues with some of the other characters in this book.

Pretty good start for series

I must say that I really did enjoy this book even though really nothing new in story's plot. I don't like to write bad reviews, I think you can list what you don't like about a book without dissing the author. I'm not an author but have read numerous articles by my favorites in which they talk about how much of themselves goes into their books. That being said, the book is well written and holds you're interest just not enough steam in the romance for my liking. It's well worth the price so if you don't mind "tamer" love scenes go for it, you won't be disappointed!

About the Author

Richard A. Gershon Ph.D. (Ohio University), is Professor and co-founder of the Telecommunications and Information Management program at Western Michigan University, where he teaches courses in Telecommunications Management, Law and Policy and Communication Technology. His previous publications include The Transnational Media Corporation: Global Messages and Free Market Competition, winner of the 1998 Book of the Year by the National Cable Television Center. Dr. Gershon has received the Steven H. Coltrin Professor of the Year Award (2000) by the International Radio and Television Society (IRTS), and the Barry Sherman Award for Teaching Excellence (2001) by the Management and Economics division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. In 2007, he was the recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award at Western Michigan University. Dr. Gershon is a founding member of the International Telecommunications Education and Research Association (ITERA) and served as the organizations first President.

Great read, even better information

Have Dr. Gershon as a professor and his book lays out all the ins and outs to how the telecommunications business operates in a clear and concise manner. Really good book especially easy to understand alot of the more complex concepts of the industry.
