A Great Book for the Times We're In

There's a high frequency of loving awareness coming through this book.

I finished reading it yesterday afternoon and my inner tuning forks were set a vibratin'. I had been noticing a particularly stringent round of discouragement and depression playing out in my mental/emotional field in the past few days. So this morning, I sat with the book again and the guidance on pages 139-153 really came home in a way that was visceral and effective.

The author expresses universal principles that I have been using from Buddhism and Advaita for years - in a way that synergizes the teachings of both, simply, clearly and practically.

The consciousness practices are accessible, loving, kind, simple, humble, doable.

May "The Sovereignty of Love" be of benefit to many and All, far and wide.

Real in every sense of the word, authentic, informed and informative,

Sabrina as authentic and courageous as she tells her personal story; she posed questions that lurk in people's minds, perhaps just below the surface. The internal struggle with the verdict, the type of sterile information available, the worries any parent has, and the joys of a promise made. She exposes the societal role in individuals' perceptions, treatment, and inclusion of people with disabilities. She supports the points made with the extensive broad research findings revealing shifts in societal attitudes, rooted causes, scientific explanation, and humanist perspectives, while offering a holistic view on family dynamics and a look to the future. She is a mother who in sharing this personal journey is intentional in making sure that she provides an alternative to the sterilized data available. I highly recommend this book for individuals, families, and health care providers. This is truly an inspiring work of a great advocate and ally.

As the younger sister of a wonderfully made person, thank you! I cannot tell you how much your memoir meant to me. We lost my sister last year at 47 1/2 years. My parents were told she wouldn't live to 2, then she wouldn't go to school, then she wouldn't graduate, then she wouldn't hold a job. She surpassed all of those "won'ts, can'ts, and couldn'ts, wouldn'ts". Just thank you so much for sharing your love and joy.

Juggling Elephants is another VERY short story book on organizing your life and becoming more effective, another in the genre that we've come to associate with Ken Blanchard, who has given it his blessing. This story, another collaboration of authors, is worth listening to several times spaced out over a long time period but certainly, in my opinion, not sufficient by itself to become life-changing.

The reason this genre sells so well, I believe, is that our lives are filled with information overload and we have extreme pressures to achieve financial security. Information overload has added extraordinary complexity to our lives, and the gradual erosion of middle class real income has added a general cultural sense that our lives are out of control. Even our unemployed are stressed out with out-of-control to-do lists and do not experience respite from information overload. Therefore, there is a need for this genre to help us to understand why our lives are so difficult and give us small but usually short-lasting bursts of hope.

You'll see that Oliver Wyman, the reader, is listed as "Contributor." I am a big fan of the excellent readers. Wyman didn't do an excellent job here, but that doesn't mean he can't be excellent in other situations. He just didn't do a good job with voices of characters, which was required for this book but not all books. I believe he'd be excellent reading books that don't require voices of characters.

The story is Ok. I'll never think of circuses the same way again! It makes sense because being a ringmaster requires talent, experience and even wisdom. This type of story could be reproduced in a sense for many types of jobs, but a ringmaster is a great example for the lessons of the story.

We're seeing more and more of these types of books being produced. They are always very short, teach using a simple story and stick to basic lessons that we probably already know but tend to lose sight of when we respond to the demands of daily life. They might even be a secular substitute for many people, although I am speculating when I say that.

Useful guide on how to find focus and how to apply it

Great little book about putting everything in your life into perspective. Oddly enough, I read the book last night and this morning ended up describing the methods to both my sons this morning. They were overwhelmed and complaining about all the crazy things going on, and the whole idea of changing yourself into the "ringmaster" resonated with both of them. The authors highlight the main ideas or concepts, which are all pretty much common sense, but useful to remember when we get swept up the the swirling circus of our lives. This book could be a lifeline to anyone who feels life spiraling out of control, and if they use the tools to focus, place the players to their best advantage and not get caught up in the impossible, it may find themselves sitting back and enjoying the show. Juggling Elephants is a crash course in finding your center and then strengthening it by taking command.

Such a simple yet profound book!

A lot of self help books are somewhat tough to read, even more so when the author is too scholarly vs light and simple. This book provides an easy to read story and relates it to the narrators life in a sense that can be easily understood by most any person, more so by a professional. If you are having a hard time balancing your life and professional work, notwithstanding the many other things needed by us humans, this is a must read and a definite addition to the shelf.

Worth the effort to find a copy

I recently acquired a copy of the 1996 English edition from AGMuller (isbn 3898756491). This is a simultaneously an esoteric and very down to earth tarot. The artwork draws on contemporary themes and images, which make them very accessible. For me, the most notable aspect of this tarot is the astrological significations. Rather than using traditional Golden Dawn, Thoth, or various French and 'Egyptian' systems, the author draws on The Elemental Tarot by Smith and Astrop for astrological correspondences. If you are a competent or advanced astrologer, especially one versed in planetary pairs or midpoints, you will love this deck. The elemental keywords on the minors are also very elegant. Not perfect, but very close to it.

In the companion text, the author's comments on the deck and approach to interpretation are generous and insightful. This is a thoroughly modern deck, by a person committed to a spiritual path. The substantive LWB (100pages) reflects this and is a wise guide to cultivation of the self, like most esoteric tarot. In many ways, it is more pragmatic and gentle. Hints, affirmations and suggestions are options for each card, as well as the main and astrological summary. One wouldn't expect to agree with all of them, but the author's experience and accessible writing are notable.

As this is a true tarot, it is also a good reading deck. Experienced users of RWS and related tarots will notice departures and resonances.

I was surprised to like the artwork more in person than on the computer screen. The scale of the cards and excellent production are well suited to the artist's method and aesthetics. The smaller, easy to handle size of the deck and its clarity leave me wanting a copy for home and one to carry with me.

Again, I strongly recommend this deck to modern astrologers and those wanting to develop insights into astrology through imagery. Looking through the deck, I was interested to see the cards assigned to planets I have in aspect, and found myself in agreement, as well as getting a few surprises. Setting up horoscopic spreads this way could be very fruitful for introspection, as well as forecasting.

Tarot card devotees may find the astrology confusing or difficult, but it can be ignored. The images and elements predominate. Astrologers will see much greater depth in the system than can be conveyed in a single book. This is a model that deserves to be adopted by other tarot artists who understand the great contribution astrologer John Astrop has made to cartomancy and pathworking.

Experimental Tarot makes this intelligent and sensitive choice, and in my opinion, bests the Elemental through more communicative and accessible imagery, if not artistry. By focusing on the numerological and elemental qualities of the suits, the Experimental Tarot, like the Elemental, results in a balanced, natural contemporary system. As in astrology, the combinations can be read by dignity, harmony, and with clear understanding of the best and worst expressions of any energy. Traditionally difficult planetary combinations and cards are opened to more interpretations with a departure or two (10 of Earth) while remaining true to form and accurate.

It is definitely a must for astrologers, collectors, serious students of symbolism across systems, people with flexible minds, and anyone who likes the system of the Elemental Tarot. I hope to see more tarot with this excellent elemental and astrological model.

Great Deck.

I must say, I love this deck. I've been interested in tarot cards for about the past three years. And during the first two years I could never, not once find a Deck I honestly liked. They were all so confusing, and different, and wonky. But then one day I stumbled upon this Deck and I've loved it ever since. I somehow made a connection with this Deck, unlike with every other I ever came into contact with. This Deck is by far the simplest I've ever used, and it's one of the most diverse Decks I've ever seen. If you're looking for a nice tarot deck, then choose this one. It's worth the money.

Her Own Words--The Best Words

THE HABIT OF BEING is required reading for any Flannery O'Connor fan. Nobody can explain Flannery like Flannery. Through her letters the reader has an immediate connection to the writer and the woman, and that connection made me regret even more that I did not know her personally. Sally Fitzgerald includes letters that show Flannery's human side, her cranky side, her funny side, even her arrogant side. I read the letters before the identity of A was revealed, and I was intrigued. I went back and read them again after that identify was made public, and I'm even more intrigued. To understand fully what Flannery was attempting in her stories, one needs to read the letters. To understand fully what she was attempting in her life, one needs to read the letters. No satisfactory biography has been written about Flannery O'Connor, but I'm not sure that one is necessary when we have at least a start at an autobiography with THE HABIT OF BEING.

Humor, Faith, and Work

Flannery O'Connor's correspondence is a fine testimony to humor, faith, and work in the life of a fascinating and absolutely unswerving human being. As she says in a letter to Andrew Lytle from this collection, the fact that she was a Catholic kept her from being a regional writer and the fact that she was a Southerner kept her from being a Catholic writer. If you want the best tutorial you're apt to ever read on how to write fiction, forget the usual "Write a Novel in 30 Days" garbage and get a copy of THE HABIT OF BEING. She'll also teach you quite a bit about living.

A Collection of American Song

This book, "The Great American Songbook: The Singers" includes sheet music with lyrics, guitar chords, and piano for 100 classical American songs. The subtitle "the Singers" indicates that the songs are organized in the table of contents by the singers who made them famous. (The songs, of course are standards, each of which has been sung by many people.) The book also includes photos and brief single paragraph biographies of the 28 singers featured in the volume. They include, Louis Armstrong, Betty Carter, Perry Como, Bing Crosby, Blosom Dearie, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, Peggy Lee, Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand, Dinah Washington,and more. The composers and lyricists are credited at the top of each song, but there is no specific index for them. There is a separate volume in this series which is arranged by composer.

The volume doesn't explain the much-used term "The Great American Songbook" and it is worth considering what it means. The term does not refer to a book or to a specific song collection per se. Instead it is used to indicate the show tunes largely from Broadway, live theatre, or Hollywood musicals composed roughly in the first half of the 20th Century.The songs are American staples and most of them will be familiar to many listeners. The precise content and number of the songs in the "Great American Songbook" is a matter for judgment. Ella Fitzgerald, among others, has recorded extensively under the title The Great American Songbook. The composers of the songs, included in the Songbook and in this collection include Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, Walter Donaldson, Richard Rogers, Frank Loesser, and more.

The songs included in this volume represent part of America's broad musical heritage and constitute a substantial achievement. This is not the music I most often play or hear. I try to play classical piano; when I listen to popular music, I turn more often to blues or early rock & roll which are beyond to scope of the Great American Songbook. I found this book prominently displayed in the local library and wanted to take a look and try the music.

The book is thick but fits comfortably on the music stand of a piano. The piano arrangements are well-done. They are self-contained in that the pianist can capture the melodic line of the song and the accompaniment without a vocalist. Thus they are fun and appropriate to play as solos. I sight read most of the pieces with mixed results. As with any music, the songs will take practicing to capture accuracy, tempo, phrasing, and melody. Some of the songs are sophisticated with rhythmic and harmonic changes. I enjoyed working of playing in these styles and trying to learn something of the songs. I needed a break from playing Beethoven and Schubert, as it happened, and this book was refreshing. Working with this collection also reminded me of the continuity of music and of song from, say, Schubert art songs, through the Great American Songbook, through the blues, for example. This book reminded me that it is good to learn broad appreciation and to love as much music as one can.

Some of the songs I enjoyed playing from the collection were, "I could Write a Book", "The Way you Look Tonight","The Girl that I Marry", "Little White Lies", "A Sunday Kind of Love", "Autumn Leaves", "I'll take Romance","Heart and Soul", "Unforgettable", "What a Diff'rence a Day Made", "Smoke gets in your Eyes", and more. Each reader is likely to find favorites in this book, together with some surprises.

I found it valuable to work with this book and to broaden my appreciation of American music and the piano. This collection is good for browsing and fun. It is also a good basic accessible collection for those with a serious interest in performing music from the Great American Songbook.

Good Selections, Great Value

This volume has a large selection of songs with enough to satisfy almost any taste in American music. Although I cannot sight read, the sheet music provides me with enough information to check the melodies that I pick out by ear, and, of course, on when to insert those pesky diminished and minor seventh flat fifth chords that no three chord wonder ever knew about. Now I can play All Of Me and Autumn Leaves, and that's only from the A's. If you like to entertain an audience, you can't go wrong buying this collection. Check out the complementary Composers volume, too.

About the Author
Born Luigi Santomauro in 1951, Lou Di Palo grew up behind the counter at Di Palo’s in New York’s Little Italy and the Italian-American neighborhood of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. Beloved by both his customers and those in the food community and media, Lou Di Palo is considered to be a preeminent Italian food expert. In addition to running Di Palo’s (for forty years and counting) with his brother, Sal, and sister Marie, he works as an Italian food educator and consultant for supermarkets, trade associations, and even Italy itself, which has given him many awards for his efforts to educate Americans in the ways of Italian food. He travels all over the United States, speaking about Italian food products on behalf of such regions or groups as the Consortium of Grana Padano or Speck from Alto Adige. With this, his first book, he hopes to bring his knowledge and passion to those who can’t make the trip to visit Di Palo’s in person.

Rachel Wharton has nearly twenty years of experience as a writer, reporter, and editor, including four years as a features food reporter at the New York Daily News. She is a contributing editor of Edible Manhattan and Edible Brooklyn magazines, and a James Beard Foundation award-winning food writer with a master’s degree in food studies from New York University.

Incredible History of Italian food and life/Incredible Family

This book is so heart-felt throughout. You even want to be part of Lou's family. Seriously. The information is so well researched that you feel you have taken an advanced course in Italian life and Italian food. It is not a once-read book, it is a book you go back and read again and again, as you don't want to miss a part of anything this man has written. I recently brought my book to Di Palo's in hopes of meeting Lou and having him sign my book. The three siblings - Lou, Sal & Marie - were all working diligently behind the counter as a team. Lou and Sal were so anxious to please the customers, to share various kinds of cheeses, to answer any questions about products. These are genuinely nice people. I just wish I had brought a larger cooler to take home more products than I purchased, especially the most wonderful ricotta and fresh mozzarella I have ever tasted. My time was limited, or else I would have stayed in that store to observe and absorb so much of the culture this family unit was exhibiting, the kind you only read about in books anymore, as they rarely exist in real life. It was like stepping back in time to the turn of the 20th Century. If you can't get to New York City to go to Di Palo's, read this book. Trust me - you will either drive to NYC, take a bus or plane to experience in person what this book is all about. Can't wait to go back.

A monument to the Little Italy of bygone days when Mott St meant an Italian Feast 24/7!

Lou and his brother and sisters were my first friends when I was a child in the 1950's. Back then Louie and I were more interested in throwing "dirt bombs" onto 70th Street in Bensonhurst and looking for nickels so that we could go to the candy store to play "The Flying Purple People Eater" on the juke box. Good times when little boys were able to explore their territory. My mother's family was comprised of fish monger immigrants from Sicily and similar to Lou's family being milk and cheese peddlers in southern Italy, there was an immediate connection between our families.
Lou has put together a book that is much more than a cookbook. It is a historical monument to the generation of immigrants who came to America and did what they knew best.....and better than any commercial mass manufacturing enterprise could ever duplicate or even create to compare with the real thing. He teaches what real quality is and where he finds it for all to share. Rare to our generation of transient children and grandchildren of immigrants, Lou and family are a gift to the people of New York.....a treasure of what once was but is rare to find today. A family who loves what they do and enjoy passing their knowledge to their faithful customers....always willing to give samples describe why their delicacies taste the way they do and AND.....you don't have to be Italian......but it helps! Which reminds me....what ever happened to Levy's Real Jewish Rye?

Perfect book for anyone that wants to know a little history about the delicacies they eat. My favorite part is that Mr. Lou DiPalo answers all the questions we are always embarrassed to ask. And remember a great Espresso is all about the crema, 20-25 seconds is all it needs! Thanks Lou.
