Prison changes all men and Malcolm is no different but he continues with his law studies and eventually passes and becomes a lawyer inside the prison and is given young offenders through his mentor; a well known lawyer in San Francisco. His original lawyer was inexperienced when Malcolm was tried and jailed, but he continued to investigate the accident and finds some disturbing evidence linking his father to falsified evidence and corruption of court and prison officials. A retrial is refused because Malcolm pleaded guilty at the original trial, but the Governor is more sympathetic to the case. While in prison, Malcolm meets the daughter of the leader of the Aryan Brothers and an arranged marriage is carried out, as the brides father is dying of cancer and needs a son to carry on his work in the prison. Malcolm agrees to the marriage and to being a father to her young son. This is a story of the growth of a youth into a vicious member of the Aryan Brotherhood; of corruption in the judicial prison system; life in jail and all the bloodshed that happens; gangs, killings, drugs, rapes; it is graphic but real.

Richard Butsch is Professor of Sociology and Film and Media Studies at Rider University, New Jersey, USA. He is author of The Making of American Audiences from Stage to Television, 1750 to 1990 and The Citizen Audience: Crowds, Publics, and Individuals, and editor of For Fun and Profit: The Transformation of Leisure into Consumption and Media and Public Spheres. He is currently writing a book tentatively titled Screen Culture: A Global History.

Sonia Livingstone is a professor at the Department of Media and Communications, LSE. Her research examines children, young people and the internet; media and digital literacies; the mediated public sphere; audience reception, the public understanding of communications regulation. Call it Winter Soldier...

While most of the reviews here criticize the book for what it isn't, I really enjoyed it for what it is. Clearly as a Civil War tie-in, and Captain America is the star of Civil War (Marvel Comics), you won't find much of Cap in this series. But, if you're an avid Captain America reader: 1. you should already own Civil War, 2. Cap's supporting characters have as much to do with his story as he does. So this is more about Agent 13, Falcon, and the Winter Soldier, and as such, still makes a good read with lots of action. And no, the Death of Captain America isn't here or in Civil War, it's in the next book, The Death of Captain America, Vol. 1: The Death of the Dream. Finally, most reviewers are right: The Winter Soldier one-shot at the end is the best part, and I hope he gets his own series.

Captain America...but not.

The book was good, don't get me wrong. But it seemed to be alot about the people around Cap instead of Cap himself, with a few exceptions. IF you are collecting Civil War TPBs it's a must. I like the Winter Soldier One-shot. All in all, a good read.

The story is OK but Cap himself is only in like 5 pages of the whole book. Don't get me wrong it's an alright story, but it doesn't have much to do w/ Cap or the Civil War for that matter.

Errors on Every Page

I read this book just after finishing Peter Berresford-Ellis' dictionary of Irish mythology, and I'm afraid this one does not hold up at all. The author apparently has no knowledge of any Celtic language, and it shows- there are embarassing errors on nearly every page as a result. For instance, he defines Alba as a "poetic name" for Scotland, whereas it is simply the ordinary Gaelic word for Scotland, still in everyday use by thousands and thousands of people. He makes bizarre claims, such as that Scotland was never really a Celtic country (in fact, Scotland was almost entirely Gaelic-speaking for centuries), and he defines the "Celtic period" as ending with the arrival of Christianity, which is nonsense especially because literally all of our sources for Celtic myth were written during the Christian era. He frequently indulges in unsupported speculation, using phrases such as "some have claimed" (in other words "I made this part up myself")and he seems to accept Barry Fell's claims of Ogham inscriptions in the new world, even though Fell's works are themselves wild flights of fancy based on ignorance of Celtic linguistics. He edits a number of stories to remove Christian elements, thus distorting the original version. Overall, this book is a classic example of the folly in trying to write about the Celts without knowledge of a Celtic language. As the author can only read secondary sources, he obviously didn't know when he was making a mistake.

Misleading

I agree with the reviewer who said that there were errors on every page. Dixon-Kennedy doesn't recognize Scotland as a Celtic country. What he frequentlly called 'Irish' should be called 'Gaelic' because the folklore of Gaelic Scotland and Gaelic Ireland is very similar as these countries once formed a single cultural entity.

Fionn MacCumhail was the equivalent of King Arthur and Robin Hood for the Gaels. One hundred different motifs of his legend were collected in Ireland and four hundred in Scotland. (Almqvist et al., The Heroic Process: Form Function and Fantasy in Folk Epic)

The book 'Leabhar na Fèinne' is a collection of all the literature of Fionn MacCumhail, as well as Cuchullain and Fraoch, that could be found in Scotland in the mid-nineteenth century. Every poem and song was composed in Scottish Gaelic (a Celtic language).

Peter Beresfore Ellis is a better reference for those new to Celtic myth and folklore, and MacKillop's Oxford Dictionary of Celtic Mythology is the best, most detailed reference to date.

The Green Man is featured on the cover of this book.

I question the inclusion of the Green Man in a book of Celtic mythology; all the provenances of this entity are in countries where a Germanic language is spoken or was spoken in the 'Dark Ages'.

Reasonably Complete

Although the book is a fairly good broadrange reference
for celtic mythology, it does come with a few inherent problems.
For a start, the author does not give references in his entries. The more and more I do research into celtic mythology and their way of life, the more I find one needs to be able to find references to 'primary sources'.
But, for someone begining in the area of celtic studies or someone merely curious, this book is a great start point.

Clear, concise but limited

Perhaps few words have been as overused and misunderstood in recent times as postmodernism. This book presents a lively, wide-ranging and highly readable exploration of what postmodernism has come to mean in the context of contemporary art.
The postmodern revolution replaced the Modernist faith in universality, authenticity and artistic progress with a world view that turned artworks into texts, history into mythology, the artist into a fictional character, and reality into an outmoded convention. Eleanor Heartley aptly examines the key developments in the history of postmodern art. It includes a discussion of Neo-Expressionism, the "anti-aesthetic" movement, the art of commodity critique, postmodern feminism, and postmodern multiculturalism. In the process she touches on a number of intriguing questions, namely: "What is art without an artist?"; "Why is photography regarded as the quintessential postmodern medium?"; "How did a movement grounded in denunciations of the commodification of art generate one of the most heated art markets in recent history?"...
Postmodernism is well illustrated, mostly with artworks from the Tate Gallery (the general editor is Simon Wilson, a curator at Tate), although not exclusively so. Excellent selections of David Salle, Lorna Simpson, Adrian Piper, Carl Pope, Barbara Kruger, Julian Schnabel, James Rosenquist, Robert Longo, Jeff Koons, Gerhard RIchter, Mary Kelley, Robert Mapplethorpe, Jorg Immendorff, Eric Fischl, Sandro Chia, and Christopher Le Brun.
It should be noted that aside from Cindy Sherman and Krysztof Wodiczko performance art is scarcely treated. Furthermore architecture, from whence postmodernism receives its name and mixed media art which it has increasingly tended towards are absent save for an aside on Philip Johnson's AT&T building. All in all however a fun and accessible introduction that clarifies and sets the stage for more in-depth inquiries into the phenomena of postmodernism.

easy to understand

this book makes the idea of post-modernism very clear. it's a very complicated subject so i feel this book does a good job at making sense. it was assigned for my class called "Art Criticism of the Post-Modern World." My professor is very smart and experienced and recommended this book because he felt it was the best one to explain the idea.

The Essential Reference to Six Sigma Methodology

The Six Sigma methodology for using statistical methods to drive continuous improvement is fairly simple in concept, but is burdened by the onerous and obscure research necessary to understand the toolkit and know which tool to apply when. At GE, Six Sigma training entails two full weeks of study, two huge binders of reference material, then the completion of at least two projects under the watchful eyes of the Six Sigma Black Belt community. Even after all this, true comprehension remains elusive.
Fortunately, "Implementing Six Sigma" serves as a handy reference work to help guide us through the tangled thickets of Six Sigma. Aside from providing numerous examples of how and when to use each of the tools in the Six Sigma toolkit, the work also frankly discusses why the methodology succeeds or fails (a lot of which has to do with the way it is implemented), and gives a good general overview of the principles behind the methodology.
The one negative about the work is the lack of a comprehensive summary. There is a smorgasbord of tools to use; when on earth is someone going to produce a handy 2-page guide to what to use when? The book is also sadly a bit light on Design for Six Sigma principles; let's face it---quality gurus tend to focus exclusively on product improvement and not on business process improvement, yet the driving force behind hidden factory costs is the inefficiency of business processes themselves. This is a glaring omission in any work which calls itself comprehensive in scope.
Still, this is a reference work which belongs on the shelf of anyone interested in Six Sigma or in the improvement of manufacturing processes. Despite the hefty price tag, it truly is the best single-volume reference to Six Sigma available.

Well-presented Six Sigma applications.

I've read many books on Six Sigma analytics and consider Forrest Breyfogles' "Implementing Six Sigma" to be the best all-around Six Sigma book available. It is 1,200 pages of Six Sigma program management and applied statistics presented in incremental stages of complexity across many different industries with working examples of production and other business problems to solve. Breyfogle understands that Six Sigma is more than an analytical and program management toolkit, it's a philosophy and an organizational mindset and this is reflected in his writing. If you want or need a single tome to be the central mainstay of your Six Sigma reference library - this is it.

Excellent book, not for beginners though!

I have to say this is the most detailed book ever written on six sigma. I have read other books on ss - as i'm preparing for my ASQ ss green belt - but havent found them to be more in depth than this, especially on the technical side. I would recommend this book for all ss practitioners and who need to have a reference guide book on their desktops!
I wish the newer edition would contain less typos and to be more clear. More examples are needed, and lots of case studies as well
All in all, its an excellent book!

His images have been featured in magazines throughout the United States and Europe and have been sold in galleries throughout Colorado.

A great resource for photographing at night

Coming from the perspective of someone who leads nature photography workshops and has written his share of how-to articles on photography, I can say that Grant Collier's Guide to Night Photography in the Great Outdoors is one thorough book. If you've wanted to learn the basics of night photography, or if you've done some night photography and want to take it further, this book will not disappoint you. And this book isn't just about photographing the night sky; it's about photographing at night, with all the different techniques, subjects (lightning, forest fires) and conditions (unseen incoming tides) that entails.
And it not just a guide on how to photograph at night. Collier covers a number of digital photography specific and post-processing techniques.

As I started getting into the book, the first thing that struck me is that this was written by someone with a lot of experience in night photography. There's a lot of good advice here that will help you plan, prepare, and execute successful night shoots. Much of this advice comes from simply doing something over and over again and learning what works and what doesn't. This book will save you from spending all that time on the learning curve.

I really like learning something new and for the most part, I don't learn all that much from books on photo techniques any more. But I learned quite a few new things from this book. And that makes my brain happy.
More importantly, what I learned gave me ideas, which makes my brain even happier.

great book for learning night photograsphy

I just finished reading the e-book "Collier's Guide to Night Photography in the Great Outdoors". Here is my review. I have read a good number of books on photography of the night sky and enjoy photographing the nights sky. Grand Collier's book is extremely comprehensive going from reviewing equipment and supplies, discussing software programs, websites and mobile apps to help you in your pursuit of an excellent night sky image. He gives great tips and instruction on how to blend multiple exposures create huge stitched images and how to process your images to make him the best that they could be. I already have learned new ways of post processing that I am going to try out.
