Great overview of the EU

Dr. McCormick provides a well written and easy to follow (considering the complexity of the topic) history and overview of the European Union and its components. His viewpoint is clearly pro-EU and pro-European integration, which is quite optimistic given the current economic crisis, and I think it is important to understand the positive impact that the EU has had as we contemplate its dissolusion.

Agradavel surpresa!

Engloba os conceitos simples de sair/evitar divida ruim, fazer reserva de emergencia e dai partir pro acumulo de investimentos, aonde da metade pra frente/ultimo terço começa a ensinar especificamente sobre acoes, mas este nao é o ponto forte do livro, pois existem dezenas sobre isso

O bacana é como isso é passado através de uma simples história, pois fica extremamente leve e de fácil absorção

Minha sensação era a de estar lendo um gibi na infancia e nao um livro de "investimento e acumulo de patrimonio", isso que ainda tem bastante coisa tecnica. Terminei lendo ele todo em 3-4 horas.

Eu tambem gostei que precificação é mencionado, porem mais no estilo "evitar loucuras" do que ficar maluco com cotação.

Se voce já investe a tempos, nao tem divida ruim e sabe analisar bem os documentos financeiros, talvez nao tenha novidade, mas se o fizer, vai gostar de ter achado um bom livro simples e rico para indicar para muitas pessoas ... pelo menos foi o que ocorreu comigo.

Mille expõe de maneira simples os conceitos que todo mundo acha que sabe, mas na verdade não sabe.
Parabéns pela iniciativa do autor e sim, o livro traz, temperado em sotaque brasileiro do interior, conhecimentos indispensáveis sobre investimentos e por que não sobre a vida, que podem ser degustados com o prazer que toda boa leitura traz.
Sorte dos que percebem esse valor inestimável da obra!

An Essential Book

Howard Suber delivered a lecture to a large gathering in a theater in Kansas City this spring. What was striking about the experience was how Professor Suber turned this theater into a classroom and, by asking questions, made us active participants in a search for answers to the question: "What makes a film great?".

Suber's book, "The Power of Film", uses this same Socratic Method but the technique is necessarily different. Instead of asking questions, a writer can only pose riddles, and to this end Suber employees wit and irony to provoke careful and thoughtful reading of his concise dictionary like definitions.

The films Suber examines are American films. Without being jingoistic, he says that over the decades American films have been the most popular not only in the U.S. but all over the world. The American films he focuses on are those that have maintained their appeal ten years after they were released those, in other words, which have stood the test of time and remain perennial favorites.

The question he asks is: "What makes these films classics?"

Some of the answers are surprising. The notion, for example, that Hollywood films, to be popular, have to have a happy ending, Suber demonstrates is not true. Think of the Godfather films, Lawrence of Arabia, Chinatown. Even "It's a Wonderful Life" journeys through some very dark regions before emerging with a comic ending.

So why do people go to see these films? Suber suggests that going to the movies is akin to going to church, that what people need and want is to experience time honored rituals that put us in touch with our humanity.

As a practicing filmmaker, I have spent many hours over the years thinking about how to use the power of film to move an audience and I am always looking for help. Of the many available, I have culled a few "essential" books on film theory and aesthetics. Eisenstein's "Film Sense" and "Film Form" are two, Pudovkin's 'Film Technique and Film Acting", Mascelli's "Five C's of Cinematography" and a few others. Suber's "The Power of Film" has already taken its place with these.

Why? Because first of all, the book is packed with information and insight covering every subject about American film, literally from A to Z. Second, the insights are uncannily precise. A brief example: I don't like using flashbacks because I feel they are too easy but I find I must at times because they are sometimes necessary and I haven't been able to think of anything better. This is in Suber's definition of "Flasbacks":

"The reason flashbacks came back is that they are not merely
stylistic flourishes, like iris shots; they are necessary tools
that, so far, cannot be replaced by others."

The authority of this statement is reassuring, but notice the two words: "so far"; this tiny insertion leaves open the possibility and, indeed, ecourages the search for other ways.

How to transition to a flashback?

"The camera moves to a tight close up of a character's eyes, they
glaze over and we hear an echo chamber voice..."

I fear that every time I use this device that someone in the audience is going to yell out: "Visual cliche!". It never happens and I continue to use it because, as Professor Suber says: "no one has come up with anything substantially better.".

This is a sampling of some of what can be considered Suber's practical advise; but this book is very rich and has a broad range and covers everything from the technical to the philosophical.

The entry for "Tragedy" is three pages long but delivers a store of wisdom. One paragraph in this concise definition is about "impulsivity", and the final line reads:

"Impulsivity we see over and over again leads to tragedy."

The philosopher Martin Buber in his book "Good and Evil" devotes pages of discussion to the tendancy to impulsivity and how it is an aspect of evil. Suber's book is obviously a distillation of years of thinking and study not only about film but also about human nature.

The entries that make up this book are cross referenced. This cross referencing, like the use of wit and irony, is not only an practical aid, but also an encouragement to explore the connection of ideas.

Suber has carefully culled the essential ideas of what makes a film "great" and this selection reveals that the subject in Suber's mind has a unity, that it constitutes an aesthetic, an interlocking system of ideas. It is an indication of Howard Suber's wisdom as a teacher that he does not expound this system but only indicates it; and because this system must be discovered and recreated by every reader, it will always be new.

A great read - informative and terrific fun

Getting the book and reading all of the blurbs on the cover written by film experts like Coppola and several successful Hollywood screenwriters, I was a bit concerned that perhaps I had purchased an insiders handbook, which might prove too esoteric for the casual reader. The 'power of the book' Prof. Suber has written, is his ability to take substantive information and make it enjoyable reading. The book is written in bite size stories, alphabetized by topic, each insightful and entertaining. I often sat down with the intent of a quick read of one or two articles and discovered I had read seven or eight. The topics are easy to digest, yet informative enough to go back and read several times.

Certainly as Bill Cosby used to say, "Be careful or you just might learn something". Film students and pros, no doubt already know about(and swear by)this book, this review is for the rest of us, those who just like films. The Power of Film would make a terrific gift for lovers of films of all ages and is certainly a must read for anyone with film career aspirations.

Memorable

THE POWER OF FILM is zen. Spare, but overflowing. This is one book on film that respects the reader. It does not tell you what to think or impose "expert" opinions. Rather, Howard Suber's THE POWER OF FILM gives you his observations then allows the reader to understand and experience for him/herself. Even better, it's fun.
Don't read this book on the subway, in a coffee shop, or when you're pretending to work at your desk. The giveaway will be your yelped aha's piercing the ambient din.
Suber has sculpted a monumental body of knowledge into an accessible, quickly referenced work that--if it were a film--would haunt you with those epic images and classic dialog that make memorable films part of us all.
Suber knows Film. That means the making, the money, the heartache, but most of all that Film with a capital F is an overarching phenomenon, not merely merchandise. It affects our lives. We live through it; we use it as a touchstone. It is this psychological aspect--the slippery intangibles of our interactions with film--that Suber wrestles with, and wins.
As a psychologist before I was a screenwriter, I was trained to study behavior as a complexity to be approached with respect, the scientific method, an armload of tests to be interpreted and, oh yes, billed for. Tests like the Rorschach are called "projective" for a reason: we supposedly hurl our subconscious fears, desires and emotions onto an ambiguous stimulus--an inkblot that can be a car crash, or mom. Suber applies this to how we fling ourselves onto film. He uses Kuleshov's famous experiment where the actor Mozukhin who stares blankly at the camera was perceived as having specific, strong emotions depending on what images he was intercut with, like a coffin or a bowl of soup or an older woman assumed, baselessly, to be mom. It swiftly makes Suber's case that the audience is an "an active collaborator" in interpreting what is on the screen.
Audiences come to film looking for themselves. Filmmakers and other artists make themselves crazy worrying that the audience is thinking about them. No, the audience is thinking about themselves: their relationships with their families, their lovers, their friends and enemies, all to the extent that the work touches them. So what Suber nudges us to discover is really the bottom line. What makes a film memorable and popular is based on "principles that deal not so much with style and technique as with the psychology of storytelling, which is ultimately the psychology of human beings."
THE POWER OF FILM speaks volumes. It references hunderds of films. It is a book you can dip into and come away awash in aha's. Wonderful book with fantastic illustrations

I purchased this for a 3 year old's birthday. She loves dinosaurs and it is her birthday so it is a perfect gift. My son has another book by this author so I was expecting a hard cover book with paper pages, instead we got a midsized book with thick hard pages. Don't get me wrong it is better than I expected! Little ones can be a bit rough on their books so having the thick hard pages works out better! It is wonderful book with fantastic illustrations. I definitely recommend!

About the Author

Sigmund Tobias is Distinguished Research Scientist at the Institute for Urban and Minority Education and Visiting Professor of Cognitive Studies in Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. His scholarly credentials include a long list authored, co-authored, and edited scholarly publications; grants; awards; invited addresses, and conference presentations. In addition, he is one of five former refugees who participated in the documentary film, Shanghai Ghetto, describing how a group of European Jews found safety from the Holocaust in Shanghai, China, during the Second World War, and which which won an Audience Choice Award at the Santa Barbara Film Festival. Tobias returned to Shanghai as a Visiting Professor at the Shanghai Institute of Education, where he began a memoir describing the life of his family in the refugee community in Shanghai. The book was subsequently published as Strange Haven: A Jewish Childhood in Wartime Shanghai.

Thomas M. Duffy is the Barbara Jacobs Chair of Education and Technology at Indiana University and the founding director of the Center for Research on Learning and Technology. He is a professor in instructional systems technology and the cognitive science program. His academic career has been dedicated to exploring the design and use of information in education and the workplace. Professor Duffy has written or edited several books and is the author of over 100 papers on learning, performance, and technology. He and his colleagues have also developed the Ready Program (adult literacy instruction), Strategic Teaching Frameworks (multimedia, teacher professional development), and ACT, an asynchronous collaboration tool for small group problem solving.

raises some important questions

I was thrilled when I came across this book. I think it gives a well-balanced assessment of the Constructivist approach that is currently en vogue, especially at online universities that cater to working professionals. I always felt that the Constructivist approach to instruction was not a one-size fits all approach and the book actually confirmed some of my sentiments about the approach. That said, the book gives an excellent and fair overview over the issue and helps educators make informed decisions about which instructional approach to choose.

I expected much more

I can't help but feel the last edit (at least for the Kindle) was poorly planned, supervised or perhaps rushed.

For example, Chapter 20's content is listed in the following order.... Ocular emergencies (True emergencies - therapy should be instituted within minutes)..... Urgent case: to be seen within the hour .....Urgent case: to be seen the same day.... Priority case: to be seen within days.... but the actual order places the section 'urgent case: to be seen within the hour' behind priority cases.

I found it frustrating that there was no way to match page numbers to Kindle pages.

But not all problems can be blamed on having a Kindle edition....

Throughout the text, the quality of the writing was inconsistent.

Telling your reader-students, the majority of whom are new to the field, go find answers elsewhere is not helpful..... (from Chapter 1 "Answers to some of the questions at the end of each chapter may be found in other parts of this book or, in some cases, only in other sources."

Also not helpful: providing photo illustrations & review questions for conditions or disorders that are not explained in the book. (vernal conjunctivitis, for example) At least include a definition in the glossary.

I bought this book to help me study for my ophthalmology certification. The book has great explanations and illustrations that are easy to interpret. The price is worth it because it provides detailed information about a wide variety of topics you would need to know in the ophthalmology setting. It is definitely useful to study for an upcoming certification or to have on hand as a reference in the office.

Bought this bout one year for more on the job knowledge etc. I am going to be taking the JCAHPO Certification test soon and luckily this text is accepted as a "at home study guide". Good guidelines but if you want quick access to "quiz" questions, use the online website that comes with purchasing this book. Much much easier to find what you're looking for. Good Luck!

The ideas, questions, issues, and problems that we study in International Political Economy (IPE) are increasingly important. It is hard to make sense of a newspaper, a business investment, or a government policy without an understanding of the theories, institutions, and relationships found in IPE. It is difficult, in other words, to understand our everyday lives without some understanding of IPE, so deeply are we now touched by international relations and global events.

We believe that IPE is so important that all college students need to understand it in a fundamental way. Our conviction is that it is possible to present this material in simple ways that retain the complexity of the global issues and intellectual problems we address, but without making the discussion fit only for graduate students. Our aim is to provide educational materials that will allow "beginners" (college freshmen and sophomores) to go from 0 to 60 in IPE in a single semester. Our hope is that these students will get excited about IPE as an element of lifelong learning and become better citizens and more knowledgeable individuals in the process. OUTLINE OF THE BOOK

The book begins with flue chapters designed to set out some basic tools for studying IPE. Chapter 1 introduces the fundamental elements of IPE. We will begin with relatively simple tools and ideas, then add layers and detail to make IPE real. Chapters 2, 3, and 4 explore three ways of looking at IPE that have been powerful forces in history and remain influential in today's world: mercantilism, liberalism, and marxism or structuralism. Chapter 5 introduces four theories (rational choice, feminist, green, and postmodern) that challenge our understanding some IPE questions and events.

The second section of the text examines the web of relationships or structures that tie nations and their citizens together. As a student sitting at your desk, you are linked to people and places around the world in a number of ways which you need to understand if you are to make good personal, business, and social choices. Chapter 6 looks at production and international trade. Chapter 7 looks at the monetary linkages that bind us together. Chapters 8, 9, and 10 examine, respectively, the debt connections, the security structure, and the ties created by knowledge and technology.

At the end of the first ten chapters, then, you should be able to imagine yourself as part of the international political economy and how you are linked to states and markets around the globe. You should have a fundamental understanding of what these linkages are, and an appreciation of the theories and perspectives that interpret these structures and guide our understanding of them.

The second half of the book looks at specific topics and problems in IPE that are essential to a sound understanding of the world today. Chapters 11 to 14 look at issues and events that are usually associated with the industrial nations of the North. We examine the European Union, the controversy over NAFTA, the IPE of Japan, and the problems of the formerly Communist countries making the transition to another form of political economy.

Problems and issues generally associated with the less developed countries of the South are discussed in chapters 15 to 17. These chapters look at the dilemma of Less Developed Countries (LDCs) and Newly Industrialized Countries (NICs), the nature of the multinational corporation, and the IPE of OPEC and oil.

Finally, the last three chapters examine global problems. The global environment and the food crisis are discussed. The very last chapter asks, "Where do we go from here?" After reviewing basic concepts and examining the fundamental tensions that shape today's world, we consider four scenarios for the future of IPE.

At the University of Puget Sound, where we teach, all of our students take a course in IPE, or something similar, in their sophomore year. We have retained the basic format that has proved so successful: a survey of theoretical perspectives followed by an analysis of structural connections, leading to sections that explore state-market tensions, North-South relations, and global problems. Within this structure, each chapter has been carefully revised. A few chapters have received major overhauls; all of them have been updated. Here is a list of the most significant changes.

Chapter 1 has been revised to make it a more user-friendly introduction to IPE for beginners (but not, as the popular how-to book series has it, for "dummies"). The U.S.-China case study has been retained and deepened somewhat. The notion of Waltz's three levels of analysis is introduced in this chapter to provide a basis for discussion in later chapters. Chapter 5 has been broadened significantly. In place of a chapter on rational choice theory, Michael Veseth has written a new chapter that surveys four theories that, depending upon your viewpoint either challenge or enrich the traditional study of IPE: rational choice, feminist, green, and postmodern theories. We want this chapter to serve as a point of entry for professors who want their students to study one or all of these theoretical perspectives without fundamentally changing the format and focus of the book. We hope that professors who wanted to be able to teach these theories as part of IPE will find this chapter's summaries useful and will supplement them with other readings and assignments. Dave Balaam has written an entirely new chapter 9 on the global security structure, uprooting the discussion from the previous focus on the Cold War and asking students to consider security as a dynamic and many-layered problem. Chapter 13's analysis of state-market tensions in Japan has been thoroughly revised by Karl Fields and Michael Veseth to reflect more clearly the political and economic crises that Japan has confronted in the 1990s. The focus of this chapter is now the model of the developmental state and the question of whether this system of state-market relations is still valid. The analysis of the transition from state to market by former communist countries has been strengthened through a revision authored by Patrick O'Neil, our colleague at Puget Sound, who joins the textbook team in the second edition. Professor O'Neil's revision adds detailed substance to the basic outline established in the first edition. Chapter 17's discussion of the IPE of energy and oil has also come in for a major revision. The focus of the chapter is now clearly on oil and the recent issues in the IPE of oil. Much of the historical analysis of the first edition chapter has been cut to make room for more recent events. "Where do we go from here?" We have revised chapter 20 to make it less U.S.-centric and to address more directly the questions and concerns that students have when they reach the end of a textbook like this. All the chapters have been revised to take into account a number of important IPE events, especially the growing discussion of and concern about economic globalization, the financial crises in Asia and elsewhere, and the advent of a single currency in Europe, the euro. Unfortunately for those of us who teach International Political Economy to undergraduates on a regular basis, most text books on the subject are either better suited to a graduate-level course, or are still mired in the past. I am grateful to David Balaam and Michael Veseth for providing a fresh, up to date, approach. I particularly like the fact that they cover basic theory as well as the modern structures of the international system. Perhaps most important to me (because I expect my students to acutally read their text) is that their book can not only be understood by undergrads, it is far less likely to be used as a sleep aid that any of its competitors.

Understanding the way things work.

I read this book during my course of IPE while studying an MBA. These book will really help students, financial advisors, CEO's, politicians and everyone involved in International Management to make better analysis and take better decisions. Some time people believes in a conspiracy and take events like a isolated things, the fact is that everything is related and the three major perspectives of the world are in constant conflict everyday. ¿The three major perspectives? Yes: The liberals and the free trade perspective, the nationalists and the structuralism or modern socialist. It also covers the green perspective (oriented to take care of the environment) . Balaam makes a very clear analysis and he doesn't take sides so you will understand the way thinks happen and the media and politicians will not cheat on you to push you to "take sides on poll's". Enjoy.

David Balaam and Michael Veseth have created a resource that is easy to understand without sacrificing the quality of the content. Introduction to International Political Economy is a thorough analysis of our modern world using the instruments of economics, politics, and sociology.
