Fell apart

This textbook was required for a course I'm taking, and before the semester was halfway over, the front matter of the book fell out, and since then other sections have come loose. I don't even have to take the book back and forth to class (it's an online course), so it didn't get any wear and tear from transport. It came apart just from the mere stress and strain of reading it at home.

Great text for NC 7th grade Math

We're homeschooling our 12 yr old for the first time this year and I needed a Math text that was simple enough for me to understand yet not so easy my son would be bored. I had used another Math text written by Lial for a college level class and was very impressed. This text explains concepts and procedures in simple language and has numerous examples to use. I would recommend buying the accompanying Solutions Manual too. I have had up to college level Calculus and my son has been in public school for 6 yrs so we may have a little stronger Math background than others, but I do think most homeschooling parents would be able to use this book successfully. The concepts are written simply and have a lot of explanations and helpful hints in the "Note" boxes. Example: Purple Note box: "One way to remember which symbol to use is that the "smaller end of the symbol" points to the "smaller number (number that is less). 1 < 4, 0 > -3.
Very practical information and strategies to memorize steps. We'll be getting into Factoring soon (ugh!) and this text breaks it down so that even I can enjoy it.

I have been below average in Math for most of my life but thanks to Prealgebra by Blair, Tobey and Slater my grade went up considerably. I managed to maintain a B average thanks to this comprehensive and easy to follow book. It set a steady foundation for me. Thanks

It's Math

I am taking in online class and this was the required text book. It worked well for someone basically trying to learn this on her own. It give a lot of examples and lot's or practice problems. The only problem is, unless you have the teachers addition you won't know if your doing the practice problem correctly.

This edition is supposed to have a code to get into: MyMathLab. An online course area that will tell you your doing it wrong, give you lots of practice, give hints, show videos and show pages of textbook to help you learn. My copy did not have this for some reason and I had to buy it on my own.

About the Author
Srini Pillay, M.D. is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. After graduating as the top medical student, he was the top award winner at Harvard during his residency and one of the top three award winners during his psychiatry residency in the US. He then directed the Outpatient Anxiety Disorders Program at McLean Hospital-Harvard’s largest psychiatric hospital and also completed 17 years of nationally funded brain imaging research. His first book, “Life Unlocked: 7 Revolutionary Lessons to Overcome Fear” (Rodale, August 2010) was voted one of five finalists in “Books for a Better Life” in the motivational category. In addition, his next book: “Your Brain and Business: The Neuroscience of Great Leaders” was peer-reviewed by Wharton Business School and is scheduled to be released in March of 2011. (FT Press, Kindle, November 2010). Dr. Pillay is widely regarded as a motivational speaker who is able to explain the science behind seemingly non-rational phenomena. Einstein would love this book!

Einstein said many quotable observations but the two that are most relevant to this outstanding book are:
"Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler"
"Any intelligent fool can make things bigger and more complex... It takes a touch of genius and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction"

After reading Pillay's "Your Brain and Business" I was attracted to "The Science Behind the Law of Attraction". I have been studying success literature for over twenty years and only recently did the relatively new discovery of brain plasticity allow me to put it all together.

Pillay is spot on point with his laser focus of what may appear to be disarmingly simple. Don't let that fool you. "The Science Behind the Law of Attraction" is what the "Secret" and even "Think and Grow Rich" and the other great success literature are trying to tell us without knowing the science behind it. Pillay knows the science and shares it with us all. Read it thoughtfully, follow the directions and you will begin to attract what you want

Don't do it.

I was expecting quiet a different thing here. What this book is: a workbook. Since I already know how to use the magnetic attraction the workbook is useless to me. I had hoped for some ACTUAL scientific explanations. Unfortunately, if you are familiar with the concept you already know what this book is about and if you are not already familiar with the concept this book is useless. I am donating it to the local library.

Porous adsorbents are widely employed for inter alia gas separation, water treatment and respiratory protection. The laboratory use of adsorption measurements is becoming increasingly important for the characterization of finely divided and porous materials.

Adsorption by Powders and Porous Solids provides a unique overview of the theoretical and practical aspects of adsorption, with particular reference to the study of the surface properties of materials of technological importance. The book gives:

Worthy Successor

A long-awaited but worthy successor to the book considered by many to be the bible of porous materials characterization: "Gregg & Sing" (2nd Edition, 1982). This collaboration between the Rouquerols and Ken Sing has created a detailed handbook covering not only important theoretical aspects, but copious experimental and application information too. Adsorption calorimetry gets more attention than before (not surprising given the Rouquerols' affiliation), as do "new" materials such as MCM's and "new" calculation models like DFT (Density Functional Theory) and Monte Carlo simulation. Importantly, there is a great deal of coverage given to adsorptives other than nitrogen (the most common but not necessarily the most appropriate in all cases). Hundreds of references are given for follow-up reading in areas of special interest. Anyone seeking a reliable, broad, yet highly informative coverage of adsorption methodology for porous materials characterization should invest in this title.

I want a Bradford!

I have loved every book by RL that I have read. Admittedly I am not into paranormal stuff so I say away from her Pyte series but all. The other ones have b the n amazing. I have read them all multiple times and to get a glimpse into kind of a where are they now was awesome. It was a little hard to follow since the stories weren't in any kind of order but still hysterical all the same. Minor editing errors but nothing I couldn't look past.

I am praying there are more neighbor from hell books coming. There were a few characters I don't remember hearing about so I am hoping those were all sneak peaks at the books to come.

Brilliant colors and varied textures of paper collage are placed in striking contrast against velvety black pages. Bold white lettering imposed on the dark background tells of seven blind mice, seen in seven bright colors. Over the course of a week each investigates, in turn, the strange ``Something'' it encounters. To one it is a pillar, to another a snake, to another a cliff. Finally, on the seventh day, the white mouse, running across the thing and remembering what the others found, concludes that it is an elephant. The tale ends with the moral that wisdom comes from seeing ``the whole.'' Adapting the old fable of the blind men and the elephant by weaving in the days of the week, the mice, and the beautiful shapes of the things they see, Young gives children a clever story, wise words, and a truly exciting visual experience.

A many-talented illustrator (Lon Po Po, 1989, Caldecott Medal) uses a new medium--collage--in an innovative reworking of ``The Blind Men and the Elephant,'' with splendid results: a book that casually rehearses the days of the week, numbers (ordinal and cardinal), and colors while memorably explicating and extending the theme: ``Knowing in part may make a fine tale, but wisdom comes from seeing the whole.'' The mice (first seen as an intriguing row of bright tails on the elegantly spare black title spread) are the colors of the rainbow plus white; they, the white text, and the parts of the elephant (as they really are and as the mice imagine them) are superimposed on a dramatic black ground. The real elephant is skillfully composed with textured and crumpled paper in gentle earth tones; in a sly philosophical twist, the form each mouse imagines is the color of the mouse: e.g., Green Mouse says the trunk is a snake, shown as green. This was a beautiful book that I remember from my childhood

This was a beautiful book that I remember from my childhood. It has a great lesson about learning all the facts before making a judgment based on only what you experience, especially since one may not experience everything the way it should be experienced.

What really makes this particular book stand out is the fact that the book's background is black while the mice are all beautiful colors that stand out against the darkness of the book. Furthermore as you are introduced to what they are experiencing the texture also stands forth while those who have read the book or know a bit about are able to quickly guess what the mystery by the pond is.

So whether you are teaching your children about learning all that they can learn about a given circumstance, teaching them colors or even the days of the week than you will find something within the pages to help you on their way. Furthermore the book is also a great read to young readers with just a bit of help as they explore the mystery of the pages.

Decent book, but lacking in some areas

This was a required text from an undergraduate Consumer Behavior course. While the book contains a lot of good information, it is baffling to me how it is in its eleventh print and still doesn't contain a glossary of the vocabulary words. Some of the vocabulary words are bolded, but never explicitly defined in the text. There are not vocab definitions in the margins even. This was frustrating for someone, such as myself and several classmates I talked to, who rely on concisely defined vocabulary words as study material, and for creating vocab flash cards. It's just an additional hassle after reading the text to have to go back and basically create my own definitions for some of the words.

I also found a spelling error and a few minor grammatical errors. Again, not what I'd expect from an eleventh edition $120 textbook.

This book was absolutely full of information. However, much of the text seemed repetitive and drab. Good material when partnered with a good instructor, but the text could be a bit more interesting.

Yawn. Gives textbooks an even worse name

I long since acquired my PhD in sociology, but have been sitting in on a marketing class at the university where I work. This is the required text.

Its painfully yawn-inducing writing style along with a mediocre-at-best book design has prompted me to return my rental. It is actually psychically painful for me to sit down and read a chapter. The text meanders, has no narrative thread, and the typographic and layout design is poor. And to think students are expected to cough up more than $100 for this insomnia cure.

Surely, with all the creative minds in the marketing community, someone could write an appealing book that could be used as a textbook. I'm now in search of something with both substance and style.

This is NOT it.

Should be called Rehashing

I had hoped that this would build on the indispensable Positioning by Trout and Reis. No such luck. This is an abbreviated version of previous works by this author and also of works co-authored with Reis. If you've read Trout and Reis before, there's not much new material here. If you are thinking about this book and you have not read Trout and Reis before, get Positioning instead. Despite the age of that book, it is still the place to start. Despite the title of this book, it does not build on Positioning to present new insights.

Trout nailed it again.

It's been about three decades ago since Jack Trout and Al Ries published what has become a classic bestseller, Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind. Since then, positioning has become the most powerful concept in marketing.

With his latest book, Repositioning, Trout's timing is remarkable.

Trout explains why it may be your answer for the three-headed monster looming over your marketing: competition, change and crisis. Competition is fierce, but you can reposition competitors to your advantage. Change is happening at warp speed, so capitalize to ride its momentum. Crisis is intimidating, but it's also an opportunity.

A Bit Tired and Less Relevant

I'm a big fan of the Ries and Trout team having picked up my first book by them perhaps 25 years ago. This volume seemed tired and rambling, lacking the crispness of earlier books. Perhaps everything to be said has been said, or Ries' counterbalance is missing, but this was a chore to read. Older volumes by Jack Trout, and Trout and Ries, are still very relevant although the examples are obviously dated. Two of my favorites are "Marketing Warfare" and "Bottom-Up Marketing", in addition to their classic "Positioning - The Battle for Your Mind". And their book "Horse Sense" is a must read for everyone considering their career and their options.
