Sphere, by Michael Crichton

From the author of Jurassic Park, Timeline, and Congo comes a psychological thriller about a group of scientists who investigate a spaceship discovered on the ocean floor.

In the middle of the South Pacific, a thousand feet below the surface, a huge vessel is unearthed. Rushed to the scene is a team of American scientists who descend together into the depths to investigate the astonishing discovery. What they find defies their imaginations and mocks their attempts at logical explanation. It is a spaceship, but apparently it is undamaged by its fall from the sky. And, most startling, it appears to be at least three hundred years old, containing a terrifying and destructive force that must be controlled at all costs.

Amazon.com Review
Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton is possibly the best science teacher for the masses since H.G. Wells, and Sphere, his thriller about a mysterious spherical spaceship at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, is classic Crichton. A group of not-very-complex characters (portrayed in the film by Sharon Stone, Dustin Hoffman, Samuel L. Jackson, and Queen Latifah) assemble to solve a cleverly designed roller coaster of a mystery while attempting (with mixed success) to avoid sudden death and expounding (much more successfully) on the latest, coolest scientific ideas, including the existence of black holes. Somehow, Crichton manages to convey the complicated stuff in utterly simplistic prose, making him, as his old pal Steven Spielberg puts it, "the high priest of high concept." Yet there is more to Crichton than science and big-ticket show biz. He is also, as any reader of his startling memoir Travels knows, a bit of a mystic--he is entirely open to notions spouted by spoon-bending psychics that most science writers would scorn. Sphere is not only a gratifying sci-fi suspense tale; it also reflects Crichton's keen interest in the unexplained powers of the human mind. When something passes through a black hole in Crichton's fiction, a lesson is learned. The book also contains another profound lesson: when you're staring down a giant squid with an eyeball the size of a dinner plate, don't blink first.

From School Library Journal
YA As in Crichton's Andromeda Strain (Knopf, 1969), the focus of this science adventure tale is humankind's encounter with an alien life form. Within a space ship lying on the sea bottom is a mysterious sphere that promises each of the main characters some personal reward: military might, professional prestige, power, understanding. Trapped underwater with the sphere, the humans confront eerie and increasingly dangerous threats after communication with the alien object has been achieved. The story is exciting and loaded with scientific and psychological speculations that add interest at no cost to the action, including an intriguing sequence in which human and computer attempt to decode the alien communication. As the story races to an end, suspicions of evil-doing fall as many ways as in a detective novel. Young adults should find this book both accessible and satisfying. From Library Journal
Crichton has rolled the present, past, and future into one highly technical and confusing science fiction adventure. The present features, among others, a pompous astrophysicist, a female zoologist, a black mathematician, and a 53-year-old psychologist, who are summoned by the Navy to examine a plane crash in the South Pacific. The past is manifested in the stranded object resting on the sea bottom where it has been for some 300 years. When the four scientists, who carry their emotional minority baggage of sex, color, and age along with them, descend to the deep in their submersible, they discover the wreck to be no less than a spaceship from the future that fell through a black hole, defying time and space. Strange things begin to happen as one by one the cast of characters diminishes. Disappointing. Literary Guild dual main selection. Marion Hanscom, SUNY at Binghamton Lib.

A gripping, suspenseful, fast-paced science fiction thriller
By Daniel Jolley
I was recently surprised to find this novel on one of my shelves; I saw the movie adaptation of the novel recently but did not remember owning the actual book. The movie was full of promise but ultimately disappointing, so I was pretty curious to see how good a read the actual novel was. Sphere is my first Michael Crichton novel, and I have to say I was quite impressed with Crichton's prowess. There are some logical flaws and inconsistencies in the plot, but Crichton is an incredibly gifted storyteller; I eagerly breezed through this novel in short order. While it is heavy on dialogue, the story touches on a number of aspects of the human personality while mixing in some profound if problematic science fiction in the process. This is a fast-paced thriller that definitely registers impressively on the suspense meter, particularly during the climactic late chapters. While the ending is something of a letdown, the story leading up to it is gripping and fascinating, and important clues and plot points are presented with much more subtlety and effectiveness than what you will find in the movie adaptation.
The novel is built around an incredible discovery; in the middle of the South Pacific, lying all but buried on the bottom of the ocean, rests a spacecraft of unknown origin. Psychologist Norman Johnson, the author of a secret government paper on Recommendations for the Human Contact Team to Interact with Unknown Life Forms (a less than serious paper he wrote primarily for the money) is called to the site, where he is informed that he will be part of a team of scientists sent to study the mysterious craft. Alongside him are an irascible Navy project commander, a brilliant, young astrophysicist/planetary geologist, a complicated female zoologist/biochemist, and a noted mathematician/logician. This unlikely team of deep ocean explorers soon find themselves in an artificial habitat resting alongside the location of the mysterious ship. Their exploration of the site yields more questions than answers, as the ship turns out to be an American spaceship from the future. The truly enigmatic discovery onboard, though, is a giant sphere of unknown composition. As the story unfolds, the team of explorers finds themselves effectively stranded on the ocean floor for a period of some days, and strange and frightening things begin to happen after one scientist somehow enters the sphere. The scientists find themselves in communication with a supposedly alien entity who calls himself Jerry; whoever and whatever Jerry is, he seems to have the power to manifest remarkable physical creations and changes in reality. The habitat and the team inside it soon comes under attack by such dangerous creatures as giant squid and killer jellyfish, but the problems eventually internalize themselves inside the group dynamic, a group that is shrinking in size as time goes by. The mysterious Sphere imparts an amazing power to those who enter it, a power that such individuals may not even be consciously aware of wielding. Ultimately, the last remnants of the research team begin pointing fingers at one another and take steps to insure their own individual survival in the face of an unquantifiable threat, making this novel a gripping psychological thriller based in a fascinating science fiction environment.
Once the team arrives in the underwater habitat, nonstop action ensues. One emergency after another challenges the crew, and the group dynamic of the team ebbs and flows along with each jarring crisis. Along the way, we see ever more clearly into the minds and ways of thinking of our main characters, and a significant amount of ideas are expressed concerning the human condition. Crichton provides for no obligatory rest areas along the way, as he takes the reader for an incredible ride that had me turning pages hand over fist in anticipation of what was to come. Some of the science is questionable, but Crichton surely makes it all sound more than plausible. The only real problem with the novel is a logical breakdown of sorts in the concluding chapters. Still, the desperate attempts of the remaining explorers to survive, when they cannot even trust one another, make for a riveting reading experience. Sphere is by no means a perfect novel, but I found it captivating and basically addictive up until the somewhat disappointing ending. The movie adaptation takes significant liberties with the original story, so I would urge you not to let the movie's failings prevent you from immersing yourself in this eminently readable novel.

Good Crichton, not his best
By Derek Armstrong
Intriguing as always, exciting from the first page, strong for the first 2/3rds and less "editorializing" than usual, but it's just not as good as his higher concept novels. But it's still very enjoyable all the way through, and as always makes you think. It feels a little dated now, but I re-read it last week and enjoyed it just as much as the first time. Sphere should definitely be a part of any Crichton fan's library. Skip the movie, though. Here, the science is less "convincing" than in Jurrassic Park (which is mostly convincing, but stretched) and Prey (which is better writing and fun, but not convincing). But that doesn't matter, because Crichton can write an adventure like few others (as long as character isn't important--character's here take backseat to concept and science). Pace, as always is good. More a rollicking adventure than "something to think about" (typical of later novels) and quite enjoyable on that level. It's the kind of novel you'll tear through in a weekend at most. And that's a good thing.

Extremely Enjoyable Popcorn
By Gary F. Taylor
You've got to give it to Michael Crichton: he writes one heck of a page-turner. Open one of his books with the idea that you'll just read a chapter or two before bedtime and you'll suddenly be bleary-eyed at three in the morning. And although this particular title, which is somewhat less well known than such Crichton novels as THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN and JURASSIC PARK, it still packs a bestseller wallop.

The premise is classic Crichton. In his younger days, psychologist Norman Johnson was approached by the United States government to write a report on the psychological impact of an encounter with extra-terrestrials--and now, on the basis of his rather flippant recommendations, he finds himself en route to a possible UFO crash sight on the floor of the Pacific ocean. Once established with his colleges in an underwater habitat, the government team encounters a mysterious space craft that contains a still-more mysterious sphere, and those who come into contact with it undergo an unexpected change.

The writing is crisp and clean, the hard science is handled quite skillfully, and Crichton plays out his story at a breathless pace: yes, a page-turner if ever there was one. Still, it is worth noting that SPHERE displays Crichton's weaknesses as clearly as it does his strengths. Strictly speaking, Crichton hasn't had an original concept in some thirty years, and just as he rehashed his screenplay for WESTWORLD into the novel JURASSIC PARK, so does he rehash THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN into SPHERE. The novel also contains both the foundational sexism and ambiguous conclusion so typical of Crichton's work.

Ultimately, SPHERE is popcorn: we've all had it before and you can't make a truly satisfying meal of it. But it is tremendously enjoyable all the same, and where is SPHERE is concerned... well, you'll eat every kernel in the bowl.

The Architecture of the Well-Tempered Environment, by Reyner Banham

Reyner Banham was a pioneer in arguing that technology, human needs, and environmental concerns must be considered an integral part of architecture. No historian before him had so systematically explored the impact of environmental engineering on the design of buildings and on the minds of architects. In this revision of his classic work, Banham has added considerable new material on the use of energy, particularly solar energy, in human environments. Included in the new material are discussions of Indian pueblos and solar architecture, the Centre Pompidou and other high-tech buildings, and the environmental wisdom of many current architectural vernaculars.

From the Back Cover
This book is offered as a contribution to the history of architecture as normally understood and was produced by fairly conventional modes of architectural history writing. When the research for the present study was first put in hand, the intention was to write a purely architectual history; to consider what architects had taken to be the proper use and exploitation of mechanical environmental controls, and to show how this had manifested itself in the design of their buildings.

About the Author
Reyner Banham (1922-88) was professor of history at the University of California at Santa Cruz.

Truly Insightful
By None
Fresh on the heels of reading his "Scenes of America Deserta" (SIC) I was prepared for some architectural pedantry and was pleasantly surprised to find a book provocative in content and full of wonderfully appropriate and obscure case studies. The previous review mentions some of the beneficiaries of Banham's writings e.g. Sir Norman Foster but another Sir worth mention is Sir Peter Cook of Archigram and his Archigram cohorts--as Banham's Wikipedia bio will note, he was a member of the Independent Group that was also anchored by Alison & Peter Smithson, and whose work seemed to predate that of Louis Kahn, many Brutalists like Kenzo Tange and Paul Rudolph. Instead, they shared a kinship with autodidacts like Archigram, Superstudio, Archizoom, Cedric Price, and one should also mention their Situationist brethren, from Constant Nieuwenhuys to Vito Acconci. In sum, Banham was there and the caliber and accuracy of his writing betrays the depth of what his involvement must have been.

That said, this book provokes consideration of the development of conditioned environments in buildings--innovations either taken for granted, or swept to the side by conventional architectural historians (and consequently by architects, asserts Banham) Remaining decidedly British in his skepticism, the author favors neither the functionalists nor the aesthetes who would hide the sometimes messy mechanical systems in order to achieve purely sculptural aims--but Banham bestows praise upon those for whom the product achieves a hybrid goal of form and function, with neither favored. His examples, from the Royal Hospital in Belfast to the Rinasce department store in Rome would be lost to history (in my opinion) had they not been set to print in this book. Additionally, his reading of Frank Lloyd Wright's work with conditioned air systems and general architect's sensibility is a breath or fresh air in a day when Wright's name is synonymous with pious exclamations and little scrutiny. Also a delight is the Olivetti Factory in Argentina, with its precast concrete tubular systems and tacked-on ventilation system that achieves its own beautiful, industrial aesthetic.

It should be noted that Banham was a great fan of Los Angeles, the desert of the Great Basin, and saw tremendous hope in the New World (esp. in the West) as a sort of 'tabula rasa.' Banham's legacy can be seen in this video: "Reyner Banham Loves Los Angeles" which is a 30 min. film currently on You Tube, which is a great testament to his lucid observation and keen imagination--his historical knowledge also seems to be without parallel, quoting the usual regimen of Western and British architectural precedents while balancing the rote with his larger archaeological understanding of historical precedence and context. An example of this is his prescient inclusion of the various "Green Movements" one of which is in full swing in 2009 and it is important to acknowledge the bigger picture relationship to architecture: Banham notes that the purely functional solution might grossly miss the mark on an architectural level (and on a cultural level) by merely serving to satisfy the latest "do gooder" platitudes. As a student of some of the Archigram founders, I can attest to their cautions that the "do gooder" mentality is often more damaging as a result of a failure to assess the actual problem and to set artificial limits on a specific project that achieve two-dimensional aims but provide a failed building. The 'beware of piousness' is a valuable warning that should not be taken lightly, whether the flag is waving for green architecture, Louis Kahn (sorry, the Richards Medical Labs didn't work), Le Corbusier (oops, should have had an operable window or two)--ironically, it's Frank Lloyd Wright who comes out the best of the self-promoters, having decades more experience than those like Corbusier or Rietveld who struggled with modern innovations--it can be considered that Wright was forced to confront passive conditioning and had some tricks up his sleeve that he was better able to incorporate/augment into his architecture without over-exaggerating or over-concealing the conditioning system.

It is worth it to add that the author also anticipates the current LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) by predicting a form of "energy budgets" that would allow for innovation in sustainable design. He is quick to add that much of the industry is geared toward marginalizing the mechanical components of designs as subsidiary components, but he only briefly touches upon some of the downsides of these innovations: sometimes extremely cold or dessicated interior conditions make for a miserable occupant, and he did not seem to note the "sick building syndrome" whereby these systems or the buildings' integral components (like wall assemblies) became infested with mold, mildew, or integral toxins. Still, it is brilliant how he assigns credit, and refrains equally so when he considers an innovation to be a redux of some historical/archaeological model. Read how he questions the success of certain vernacular architectures--hallowed by the reaction against the International Style--but maintaining their own flaws. The landscape isn't simple, and Banham tirelessly confronts it. Admirable.

There is a lot in here to reacquaint the architect with the fundamentals from his/her training, as well as much consider for the lay person, though it is a lot to tackle for someone outside of the realm of architecture/engineering/construction. All in all, it is a superb book critical to any designer or design team, and is all the more relevant during this resurgent green architecture movement. I can only wish that Banham could live another 100 years to continue providing his readers/listeners with his keen mind and wit.

Enlightening, Eloquent, and Entertaining - An environmental designer's "Must read"
By Hal Levin
Banham was clever, curious, and creative.

He discovered that Wright's marvelous purportedly natural house got all sorts of technological help.

He discovered that the photos of the purportedly undecorated grain silos in Corbusier's Towards a New Architecture (Vers un architecture)were actually air-brushed to get rid of the ornament and support Corbu's philosophy/aesthetic sense.

He was dedicate to understanding and able to relate the motivations for new technologies to their evolution in a broader way than the narrower views of engineers who might focus on a single environmental control technology as though the environment (built or natural or both) could really be divided into such artificial and almost arbitrary compartments.

His acumen and wit were superb, unique, and are sorely missed as we face more urgent needs for understanding the built environment and its relationship to the larger one. He was a sort of early building ecologist.

An Excellent Book
By A Customer
This is an excellent book. I read it in the early 1970's and it has to be a classic as it has stuck with me all this time. By suggesting that the mechanical and electrical apparatus of our modern dwellings is more important than decorative appearance it puts forward the seminal concepts that have driven the architecture of Sirs Norman Foster and Richard Rogers, and today's High-Tech Movement in architecture.

Clever and witty play
By BH Harris
Of all of Shakespeare's plays that I have read, this is the most enjoyable. The characters are real and engaging - the sweetly stupid Bianca and her hoard of suitors, Baptista, who is more interested in selling his daughters to rich husbands than making them happy, the sly and masterful Petruchio, and most of all, Katherine, the Shrew. The play is full of action, comedy, and enough mistaken and hidden identities to keep the reader happily confused.
Katherine, who appears to be "tamed" by Petruchio's cruelties, learns the art of subtlety and diplomacy that will enable her to survive in a society ruled by men. Her speech in the last scene is not a humbling affirmation of the superiority of men, but a tounge-in-cheek ridicule of Petruchio, Lucentio, and Hortensio, who think that a woman can be tamed like a wild animal by a few days of bumbling controll.
The Folger Library of Shakespeare's plays are the most readable editions that I have seen. There are detailed side notes and definitions of unfamiliar words, which are perfect for the reader who is not familiar with Shakespearean English.

Kiss me Kate, we will be married o' Sunday
By E. A Solinas
"The Taming of the Shrew" is probably William Shakespeare's second most controversial play -- nobody can figure out if it's misogynistic or a biting double satire on the sexes. Whatever it is, it's still a witty and hilarious comedy that pits the titular "shrew" against a crazy guy determined to browbeat her into traditional subservience... and while they're no Beatrice and Benedick, it is lots of fun.

Framing device: a local lord and his hunting party stumble across a drunken tinker, and decide to play an elaborate prank on him. They dress him in rich clothes, arrange fine food for him, and even drag a protesting servant boy in to pretend to be his wife. And they put on a performance for him as well: Baptista Minola has two daughters, the hot-tempered razor-tongued Katharina and the quiet, demure Bianca.

Since Bianca is not allowed to marry until Katharina is, her suitors form an alliance to get the elder sister out of the way, which is made more complex when a young student named Luciento falls in love with Bianca, and comes up with a clever plan to woo her. Enter Petruchio, an impoverished nobleman with as sharp a wit as Katharina -- and since he's the only one willing to marry her, her father jumps on the chance. From the very beginning, Petruchio beats her over the head with crazy reverse psychology, a ridiculous wedding ceremony, and a honeymoon from hell.

It's often debated whether "The Taming of the Shrew" is a sexist play or not, since the strong-willed, independent Katharina ends up another little obedient wifie, lecturing the other wives on giving their husbands "love, fair looks and true obedience." Blech.

But consider: this speech comes from a woman who, after years of intimidating the men around her, has been browbeaten, emotionally abused and humiliated until her boorish hubby finally "breaks" her... not exactly a rousing celebration of "the taming of the shrew," or of Petruchio! If anything, Shakespeare seems to be hinting that women should be subtle about their rebellion (as Bianca is) rather than broadcasting it to the world... and perhaps that is what the "shrew" had really learned.

And as usual, Shakespeare wraps the play in delicious wordplay ("You lie, in faith; for you are call'd plain Kate,/And bonny Kate, and sometimes Kate the curst"), weird situations (the ridiculous wedding), and an farcical romantic tangle centering on Bianca. And Shakespeare has some fun with the framing device about Christopher Sly -- while the lord is being a jerk, the whole situation is just so hilarious that it's impossible not to enjoy it.

And the characters are pretty fun as well, even when you want to kick them in the backside -- Katharina is delightfully witty, bombastic and very intimidating, and Petruchio is a hilarious, witty jerk who knows just how to counter her. Bianca seems like a subservient doormat at first, but Shakespeare hints that (in her own way) she's just as rebellious as Katharina, unbeknownst to her clownish admirers and her worn-out dad.

"The Taming of the Shrew" seems like a pretty offensive piece until you see all the little barbs sticking out of the surface. Really uncomfortable, and truly brilliant.

Oxford World's Classics is the best choice for Shakespeare
By R. Rockwell
There are many reviews of the play below,, so I am reviewing this particular edition of tthe play. As someone reading all of Shakespeare for the second time, I am always alble to learn something from the World's Classics introduction. They are scolarly and complete and the text always has footnotes on the same page. I have tried other editions but these are the best.
The Taming of the Shrew although it does contain episodes that are misogynistic to modern ears does portray a couple truly in love. As an early play Shakespeare is beginning to find his own voice.

Review
Former world-champion athlete turned best-selling author (The Way of the Peaceful Warrior and Secret of the Peaceful Warrior), Dan Millman proffers his latest book, The Laws of Spirit, in that time-honored form of storytelling, the parable. In a series of fictional allegorical tales, Millman is taken on a tour of wild forest and mountain habitats by a shaman-like wise woman he meets in a mountainside cove. Together they explore and observe nature and her creatures who show them much about principles such as faith, compassion, choice, action and surrender. A modern-day oracle of uplifting wisdom, this little book aims to open the heart and enlighten the mind. -- Body, Mind, Spirit magazine, January 1996

Millman's parable of a wise woman and laws of spirit which help to make life work smoothly contains gentle reflection and spiritual education for all who consult his title. The laws of spirit are at the basis of all religious traditions: Millman's outline documents their importance. -- Midwest Book Review

Millman, the author of Way of the Peaceful Warrior, has another likely bestseller in his latest book. The fictional story begins with the author/hero taking a walk in the mountains and meeting a wise woman who leads him on a journey to places not connected by our understanding of spatial reality. Along this journey, she teaches our hero some simple spiritual principles, such as The Law of Balance, The Law of Integrity, The Law of Action. Each of the twelve laws is illustrated by coupling the heros simple ignorance with the wise woman's storytelling. Readers who have enjoyed Millman's other books will certainly want this one; his easy conversational style is still engaging. -- NAPRA ReVIEW, Fall 1995

From the Publisher
To our readers: The books we publish are our contribution to an emerging world based on cooperation rather than on competition, on affirmation of the human spirit rather than on self-doubt, and on the certainty that all humanity is connected. Our goal is to touch as many lives as possible with a message of hope for a better world. - Hal and Linda Kramer, Publishers

From the Inside Flap
Within the mystery of our existence, the universe operates according to spiritual laws as real as the law of gravity and as constant as the turning of the heavens. These laws can transform our relationships, careers, finances, and health. Simply put, they make life work.

In The Laws of Spirit, Dan Millman offers a teaching tale, a parable, in which he encounters a woman of great wisdom while on a mountain hike. Seemingly ageless, with mutable features and lightning quick reflexes, this nameless sage takes him on an odyssey of spiritual discovery. Through stories, tests, and experiences in the wilderness, she illuminates the laws of balance, choice, process, presence, compassion faith, expectation, integrity, action, cycles, surrender, and unity.

The laws of Spirit belong to each and all of us. They are found within our own hearts and at the heart of every religion, moral system, and spiritual tradition. As you make your own odyssey through the pages of this book, you will find keys to inner peace and hidden potentialopening doors to a deeper sense of meaning, connection, and harmony with all of creation.

The Laws of Spirit is a book that you will refer to again and again for inspiration on lifes journey.

Powerful, yet easy to read
By skygazr
This is one of the best books I've ever read concerning spiritual laws and ideas. I think I'll have to read it a few times to fully grasp all the concepts, but I was surprised at how, while reading it, it actually fit what is currently going on in my life. I expect, this may be one of the gifts I give for Christmas this year. As more people come to understand and practice these ideas and principles, our world will be transformed.

A wonderful book that makes you think and reflect
By Jan Murray
I'm taking a class at my church; we are using "The Laws of the Spirit" as a text. We have wonderful discussions. This book takes basic principles of successful living, and in the form of 'shadowed icons/ mystical characters,' wise insights are imparted to the reader.
One of the characters is a wise cat. I love cats. They have so much wisdom for the rest of us.

A Wonderful Book of Laws to Live By
By Katie
"The Laws of Spirit" is a wonderful tale through which the author has woven 12 essential laws to live by - laws that, when brought to our awareness, and utilized, can literally change your life!

The story is based around a man who has recently begun both a physical & spiritual journey, and the sage he meets along the way. This sage teaches him about each of the 12 laws, providing wonderful examples & showing him how to apply each one to every-day life.

I love that each "law" is explained in "down-to-earth" language and that, due to the examples given, it becomes quite easy to see how they can be used to better our lives on a day-to-day basis.

"The Laws of Spirit" is a relatively small book, as it can easily be read in 1 or 2 sittings. However, I would suggest either keeping the book handy so that you can re-read it, or taking some notes so that you can easily be reminded of the many insights given. (I chose to take notes, so it took me a little bit longer to finish the book - but I now have the info. I need to put into practice all that I learned).

Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in spirituality & personal growth. It's an easy, interesting read, that is jam packed with wonderful insights.
