About the Author
Susan B. Jhirad has a Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literature from Harvard University and is a retired Professor from North Shore Community College, where she taught literature and writing for thirty years. She is a lifelong activist in causes such as civil rights, peace, women’s liberation and worker’s rights. In recent years she has followed Dickens’ example, joining a local Unitarian-Universalist church, because of their “spirit of toleration” and social engagement. She is the author of numerous articles published in The Women’s Review of Books, The Boston Globe, Cineaste, Ms. and The Radical Teacher, among others. She has a chapter in the upcoming book published by Bloomsbury Press, Class and the College Classroom. She lives in Massachusetts with her husband, Michael Glenn.

A great contribution

This book is a great contribution to our understanding of Dickens, and of his characters. The author cites Dante's classifications of the circles of hell, and looks at Dickens' more sardonic portrayals. A moral and social critic, Dickens used his great literary gifts to span classic and industrialized versions of good and evil. His gift for characterization, description and dialogue are recalled. A work of scholarship as well as an original look at Dickens' work, Susan Jhirad explains why Dickens' books are so very relevant. This should be required reading for any scholar or student of Charles Dickens. This book is beautifully organized, by the way, and the writing is delightfully clear and persuasive. A pleasure to read!

Wonderfully engrossing

Dickens Inferno
The Moral World of Charles Dickens

This thoughtful and well constructed piece of scholarship compares Dante (1265-1321), a Catholic mediaeval writer and one of the greatest literary icons of the Western world, with Dickens (1812-1870) an Anglican turned Unitarian writer and social critic, generally regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian period.
The book is dedicated to "all those who keep alive the passion of social justice."
In this piece of work Dickens' villainous characters are plucked out of their milieu and dumped into the appropriate circle of Dante's Inferno.
The author maintains that these two giants of literature, despite the many centuries that divide them, have a great deal in common and proceeds to demonstrate that.
This is an illuminating book that explores the complex, fascinating inter-twining themes of Dickens and Dante in a manner that renders it accessible to the reader and is remarkable for its clarity.
I found there was a special quality to the author's writing style that really distinguishes this book. She knows how to tell us about Dante and Dickens and their work and the values and beliefs that sustained them.
I enjoyed this book very much because it is a marvel of research and an awesome venture.

About the Author
Charles A. Wood is a planetary scientist who has worked at the Smithsonian Institution, Johnson Space Center, and the Planeary Science Institute in Tucson, AZ. He has taught and led education and research groups at the University of North Dakota, Biosphere 2 in Arizona, Haile Sellassie I University in Ethiopia, and at Wheeling Jesuit University. He is currently the chair of the Lunar Task Group of the International Astronomical Union Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature. Maurice J. S. Collins is a skilled amateur astonomer who enjoys exploring the moon through datasets now publically available from spacecraft, as well as observing and imaging the moon from his backyard. He won the 2011 Murray Geddes Prize, New Zealand’s highest astronomy award

Not recommended - Fix it.

Briefly, this Atlas should have been edited thoroughly before being printed. In a book of only 111 pages, an entire page is given to listing errors in its text and maps.

The error page lists thirty-seven "typographical errors of lunar nomenclature", most on the charts themselves and in their index entries. There are five "errata", three of which are major and unforgivable: (1) a picture purporting to show crater Plinius in detail actually shows Eratosthenes (2) crater Cassini is printed aligned 180 degrees differently than all other features and (3) an image of the Caucasus Mountains is accompanied by a description of the "Alpes" Mountains, that erroneous name is itself a departure from the nomenclature adopted for mountain ranges in this atlas). The page ends with a list of six "other errors", one of these mentions that two of the three craters commemorating the Apollo 11 astronauts have been mislabeled.

I immediately went through the book with a highlighter to try to salvage it as a reference tool. This is the only time I've ever felt the need to do this with any brand new book. I believe it was a disservice to have released a reference book in this condition.

Speaking as a long-time lunar observer, I found Charles Wood's (the author of this atlas) The Modern Moon the most instructive book on our moon readily available. His descriptions of the processes that shaped the features we see on the lunar surface make that book a treasure. That same approach can be found to an extent in this atlas. It makes lunar observing more than an exercise in crater identification and aesthetics. It makes it an opportunity to learn some planetary geology and recognize the structural clues that reveal how a world was formed.

Also praise-worthy, the quality of the photographic images and the organization of the area charts (twenty-eight large area charts) in this atlas are better than in the competing Cambridge Photographic Moon Atlas. This atlas would be much easier to use scope-side than the Cambridge. So, there are a lot of things to like here and on balance, I'd call it the most useful photographic lunar atlas available.

But as a scope-side atlas, it suffers from the same complaint directed against Rukl's Atlas of the Moon, the standard paper-based lunar atlas for quite a few years. Specifically, there's no overlap between charts. Features along chart borders are often sliced and an observer may find it hard to identify them or fail to notice their structure entirely. Also navigating across charts can be frustrating.

Overall, I find that Sky & Telescope's Field Map of the Moon or, better yet, a computer-based atlas is much more practical for telescopic observing. The scale of the former allows better feature identification while the flexibility of the latter makes all paper-based atlases seem obsolete and best suited for a desk or coffee table.

In summary, I'm sorry to say that I wouldn't recommend this atlas, regardless of how it's to be used, until it's reissued in another, hopefully corrected, edition which would put it on an equal footing with other references.

Useful Atlas

I have looked through the Atlas and feel like the information provided as well as the beautiful High Definition images will provide many hours at the telescope while observing the Moon.
I rated this book 4 stars because of the number of errors listed on the Errata Page in the back of the book. I was surprised to see the number of errors in a new first time published book. A person can use the book, but needs to find a method that will work for them adjust for the errors. Some descriptions of images are switched with others, Typographical errors of lunar nomenclature ( incorrect spelling given), Images of craters are reversed, landing sites are indicated on wrong images. To keep from being confused, check the Errata page first and make notes on the effected pages.
I was aware of the errors in book prior to ordering, but it did not effect my purchase decision.

Very good moon atlas

I'm always on the lookout for good star and moon atlas. Before purchasing them, I check them out through my local library to see if they are readable, compact, and laid out in a logical manner. Another point is the spiral binding. This allows the book to lay flat, a must at the observing site. The best point the 21st Century Atlas of the Moon meet every one of these points.

The very thorough treatment makes this well worth reading for any student beginning a healthcare career, or the clinician wanting to produce more persuasive and rigorous publications.

There is not much in the book that you can't find online for free. Universities have websites to help improve writing skills and a simple google search can yield all of the same information in this book. If your professor does not insist that you buy this it, don't. There are no assignments in it so it's not likely you will miss anything without it.

Good book for those new to writing for publications

I actually took the class from Mr. Lang at Ohio State which was a pretty good class. This is the text that he wrote. This serves as a good entry level text for those that are new to writing for publication in scientific and medical journals. It gives good points on those questions you ask your self like what font to use on a professional poster? or what information a plot should show for publication? Has a follow-up book "How to Report Statistics in Medicine" which is also a good resource to have on your bookshelf.

About the Author
Robert Siegler is the Teresa Heinz Professor of Cognitive Psychology at Carnegie Mellon University.  He is the author of the cognitive development textbook Children's Thinking and has written or edited several additional books on child development.  His books have been translated into Japanese, Korean, Spanish, French, and Portuguese.  In the past few years, he has presented keynote addresses at the conventions of the Cognitive Development Society, the International Society for the Study of Behavioral Development, the Japanese Psychological Association, the Eastern Psychological Association, and the Conference on Human Development.  He also served as Associate Editor of the journal Developmental Psychology, co-edited the cognitive development volume of the 2006 Handbook of Child Psychology, and served on the National Mathematics Advisory Panel from 2006-2008.  In 2005, Dr. Siegler received the American Psychological Association's Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award.   Judy DeLoache is the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia.  She has published extensively on aspects of cognitive development in infants and young children.  Dr. DeLoache has served as president of the Developmental Division of the American Psychological Association and as a member of the executive board of the International Society for the Study of Infancy.  She is currently the president-elect of the Cognitive Development Society.  She has presented major invited addresses at professional meetings, including the Association for Psychological Science and the Society for Research on Child Development.  Dr. DeLoache is the holder of a Scientific MERIT Award from the National Institutes of Health, and her research is also funded by the National Science Foundation.  She has been a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences and the Rockefeller Foundation Study Center in Bellagio, Italy.  She was recently inducted into the National Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Amazon, the real MVP

My professor curved a lot. Sometimes the textbook didn't match what she would lecture. Not sure whose fault that was. But overall very informative. Came brand new. I reused the box it came in, printed the free shipping label, took it to the nearest carrier, and poof. It was returned.

Thank you for having thus textbook super cheap compared to other sites and the store on campus. Amazon, you're the real MVP. My wallet thanks you.

Very Expensive, But Only Because It Costs A Lot

Of all the books I have ever purchased, this is easily the most recent. If you look at this book compared to the third edition, you can see that the publisher had to repaint the entire cover. And if you think that comes cheap, you probably haven't hired a painter recently. What's more, inside the book some of the words had to be changed as well. It all adds up. Before I spend this kind of money on a book, I always check to see if there is a low-mileage S-Class Mercedes available for less. There wasn't.

Not Exactly What The Title Suggests

I expected this book to be provide moderate coverage of alarm system and physical access control security with a focus on hardware level attacks and defenses. My expectations were only partially met. Instead what I got was a book about general security design and assessment principles that didn't talk about hardware until the last few chapters. The book took a more abstract and high level approach than I would have liked. The only time the book went into detail was in the appendix, where it discussed at length a method of factoring numbers: A topic that is only tangentially related to the rest of the book. But there was an informative discussion about security devices, especially biometric controls.

The central theme of the book is to not trust. Every chapter discusses problems that can be traced to the incorrect assumption that certain input should be trusted. And the solution is to always validate, authenticate, encrypt, hash, and minimize storage and transmission of sensitive information. This applies even if the data is coming from a different part of the same system. The constant dire warnings about misplaced trust and the author's other suggestions are backed by analysis and anecdote, but not data. While I agreed with most of the advice, I felt the author spent too much effort conveying the possibility of attackers being able to decrypt secure tunnels and not enough attention to more likely attacks. But the attention to that possibility did make me realize how often I assume that because something is encrypted it is therefor safe.

Overall Black Hat Physical Device Security was poorly edited. I found many places where words were misspelled or even left out entirely. Sentences were sometimes poorly worded and redundant. And the code examples added almost nothing.

I enjoyed this book and picked up some great ideas. I don't regret reading it, but can't say I'd recommend it.

There are many misconceptions about security and the quality of products in the world. This book offers a larger perspective on the details of why those misconceptions exist. We must often dig deep to find these flaws and sometimes review explicitly technical processes. At the same time, surrounding these technical details are demonstrated concepts of trust and assumption that have plagued products in the past, present, and surely in the future. Some texts may demonstrate a problem and a precise solution to that problem. This book offers the understanding of how and also why. It takes the reader from looking at any product, software or hardware, and integrates perspectives specific to trust and reliance upon technologies, which, by design, were never intended to supply a secure infrastructure. You will also see the reasons why these technologies fail; trust and assumption.

Recent intrusions into network and wireless infrastructures are just mere examples of products; however functional they may be, that, in general, lack any quality assurance specific to the types of attacks that are reviewed within this book.
