Happy Homemade: Sew Chic Kids

Simple, classic patterns for boys and girls. Diagrams and simple instructions along with a variety of styles and sizes makes this a "must-have" book for intermediate and advanced sewers. The only problem I had was in the actual patterns that DON'T have the seam allowances OR hems added. It was clear that the seam allowances had to be added, but it was not as clear that the hem allowances were also to be added. Once that was clarified, the patterns went together beautifully.

Great for newbies to Japanese pattern books

I sew clothes for my boys and the shorts, pants and hoodie in this book made it worth the price. The patterns are easy to find on the pattern sheets, outlined with frixion highlighters and taped to a sunny window and you can trace the highlighted pattern easily. Don't forget to add your seam allowances before cutting the traced pattern, they aren't incorporated in the pattern you trace. Erase the frixion highlighter marks with a medium hot iron and you're ready to fold and reuse. This is a popular book and there are many tutorials online if you get stuck on some of the instructions. I am still new to sewing apparel (I have quilted in the past), and the shorts came out better than I could have imagined. Though I did have to make a size smaller than what he wears from the store. He is a size 5T and I had to take in the size 4 pattern to fit him.

Great bang for your buck.

You get so much for the price! This is my third japanese sewing book, and once you get used to tracing the patterns and adding seam allowances, it is quite easy. I but rolls of children's easel paper, tape in a window and trace. I made the long flaired shorts in a pink linen for my daughter. They are great for school because they look a bit like a skirt, but are great for playing in and easy to make.

Excellent addition to your 12 Night shelf

There are several really worthwhile editions of 12th Night, but don't overlook this one.

The Foreword and notes are excellent and useful; the format's sturdy and readable.

It's a good copy to have for the scholar/performer/director.

Understanding Shakespeare

For a long time I would not let my students use No Fear because I wanted them to be able to read the play in Shakespeare's words, but when I tired to discuss the plays with them, I always felt like I was the only who read the play. (I use it for Hamlet as well.) After I let them use it the first time, I was so excited to hear my students' comments on the play because they actually understood what they were reading. When they write about the play and when we discuss it, we use Shakespeare's words. We also compare the modern words and Shakespeare's words. I really like the No Fears and recommend them to people who really want to understand Shakespeare. I have taught high school and am now teaching at a university, so I know the No Fears are great on both levels.

Naxos complete recording the best so far

Please notice that G.H.'s in-house review above does not refer to the recording pictured above, nor do any of the reviews so far. What follows refers only to the Naxos set.
There are now three complete recordings of available. We have the older and elegantly read version on Harper Audio with Dorothy Tutin as the best Viola of the lot. Acted with a bit more verve though with less poetry is the Arkangel Shakespeare recording with a Scottish Malvolio and a cast of younger sounding actors who are making names for themselves in Great Britain. However I am very impressed with the "Twelfth Night" that is one of the latest additions to the Naxos Classic Drama series.
By far, this is the best-produced "Twelfth Night." One actually feels he is hearing an actual stage performance with all of the action but with the loss of none of the poetry. Perhaps the Viola does sound a little maturer than imagination would have her and the Sir Toby Belch a little less belchy sounding than others. None of the Festes sing as marvelously as did Peter Pears on the long deleted Marlowe Society recording (also with Tutin); however, on this Naxos set David Timson stays nicely in tune--and directs the production to boot. And he keeps things moving neatly along, which is saying a lot for Shakespeare recordings.
The CD version has the advantage of excellent tracking cues for not only each scene but for key points within the scene. The Harper CDs give a new track only for each new scene and the tapes (of course) are quite useless in that regard. The Arkangel series at present exists only on tapes but they are planning to reissue the entire series on CDs. So this Naxos release is the one of choice so far.

About the Author

John Fante began writing in 1929 and published his first short story in 1932. His first novel, Wait Until Spring, Bandini, was published in 1938 and was the first of his Arturo Bandini series of novels, which also include The Road to Los Angeles and Ask the Dust. A prolific screenwriter, he was stricken with diabetes in 1955. Complications from the disease brought about his blindness in 1978 and, within two years, the amputation of both legs. He continued to write by dictation to his wife, Joyce, and published Dreams from Bunker Hill, the final installment of the Arturo Bandini series, in 1982. He died on May 8, 1983, at the age of seventy-four.

Reads like a fine wine

Anyone interested in early Fante should read this book which includes Dago Red which was published as a separate volume.

This books shows the seeds of a writer taking root and growing into an artist. Included are several of Fante's early stories - Bricklayer in the Snow, First Communion, and Altar Boy - all revealing of the heart and emotions of the writer.

Interestingly, the copy I bought secondhand came from the Boulder, Colo. Public Library, the same town where many of the stories are set. I think I'll keep it.

Great Opportunity to learn some advance techniques

I just bought the Kindle version of Harry Harrington's "Bonsai Inspirations 2" ($10 US). I haven't bought a digital version of a bonsai book before, but I'm pleased. I can enlarge the photos and get a good look. It's a great book if you're like me, an advanced beginner, and you need more than the typical "how to" book. Haven't read all of it yet but it is rich in detail (both text and photographs). The only complaint that I have about the digital version is that it isn't conducive to browsing the photos. But I liked the fact that I paid my money and I was reading it minutes later.

I totally recommend this book. I own a lot of bonsai books. Both bonsai inspirations 1 and 2 are some of the best I have read.
They are extremely well written, easy to understand and covers lots of the advanced information that I am yet to find elsewere.Dont get me wrong they are good books for beginers as well!

Came quicker than anticipated, and in wonderful condition. And it makes me wonder, japanese manga comes wonderfully bound, and usually with cute little inserts advertising other titles, while the american offerings are essentially paperback books... hmm.

A Female Japanese "Napoleon Dynamite" - Now with Action Figure!

First, note that this book is the original Japanese version, printed in Japanese. I bought it as a gift for my manga loving daughter who is a Japanese major in college.
Japanese manga "tankubon" collection books are as a rule printed beautifully on high-quality paper and are carefully bound. They frequently have promotional 'extras" tucked inside that you will not find in the translated manga sold in the U.S. The U.S. printed manga are cheap pulp paperbacks by comparison. This is a high quality book for the price.
This version of the tankubon manga comes with a little figurine of Tomoko, the main character of the manga. Although it is quite small it is very detailed, looks just like the character in the manga, and is adorable.
The art is not the greatest that I have seen in some other manga, but the story is hilarious, so as long as it gets the story across, who cares?
As for the story, the closest thing in the USA I could compare it to is the film "Napoleon Dynamite" - a story about a socially awkward teen whose imagination and strange ideas of what should be cool go against the grain of all the popular people in school. Her misguided inner dialogues and embarrassing situations caused by her clueless reasoning make for lots of laughing and not a little bit of cringing.
