Well, Well, Well...

Obviously the other person who reviewed this product has never heard of "non-linear storytelling"...or of the visionaries Quentin Tarantino or David Lynch who make their living off of telling great and epic pieces using a non-linear format.

The story at this point is supposed to feel like there is something missing...thats because there is...the opening chapter has not been released to the public yet. Think in terms of Kill Bill or Pulp Fiction.
The story shows you the plot and gets you attached to the characters and then will go back and explain who you are really pulling for. (And if I'm not mistaken, the first one or two reveal a little about the past of the main characters) These comics begin telling the story at the beginning of the first album "The Second Stage Turbine Blade", which (as any true Coheed junky would know) is the second chapter in the story. (And it's not that hard to tell what chapter is what based on the albums. The number of the chapter is in the title of the album)

The reason for lack of text and lack of certain characters character development is because there is so much action and suspense building. These stories are building up to a very epic finale (don't want to say too much or ruin it). If anyone has any doubts on where this story is going, then read "Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV Volume 1: From Fear Through The Eyes of Madness". That graphic novel shows the beginning of the "end" of the story.

And as for the "simplicity" of the whole thing...i believe that if I were telling a story about a galactic apocalypse, androids, fallen angels, robots that can speak to "God", super powers, baby killing, tragic love stories, deceit, and over all Good v.s. Evil...i would HAVE to at least TRY to tell it in the simplest form possible just so i wouldn't lose the reader in a permanent state of confusion.
(on a side note...for more of a background on the story, there is a "sketchbook" that was released under the Amory Wars title that gives a background on each character and an "extended" look at the original opening of the story...)

Over all, the Amory Wars epic is a very new concept to the world...and, even though it seems to pair with other certain stories at times, it is very original in many ways. I believe it is too early to judge the overall story, but i believe we are in store for greater things.

The collected and the comics themselves get 5 stars!

Bought as a gift but now I want one for myself!

Provides amazing back stories the to all the songs on the Second Stage Turbine Blade album. The book has a velvety hardcover with a metallic blue keywork on the front. The cover pictured is actually a laminated dust cover that can be removed and set aside to prevent any tearing so it can stay in good condition. All the pages are laminated and great quality. Also comes with a ribbon book mark attached to the top of the side binding which is really convenient. Any die-hard Coheed and Cambria fan will love this book and it makes a great gift!

Absolutely a must have if you're a Co&Ca fanatic!!!

This is an excellent companion to go along with their albums. I chose this version over the individual comics because it gave me all 5 issues of The Second Stage Turbine Blade, Vol. 1, in one full book. Claudio (The Writer) is a very talented individual. I do not believe that anyone who is a fan of Co&Ca could be disappointed by this graphic novel.

Exellent Book

It is hard to believe that with over one thousand years of occupation and colonization by the Han, Viet Nam is still an independent country. It's language, culture, religion, location are a few reasons that helped the Vietnamese in the past stood up and successfully against the occupiers. This book contains useful details to explain why many small states in southern China were Hanized and became a part of China except Viet Nam. I recommend every Vietnamese should read this book.

Sau hơn một ngàn năm Bắc thuộc, dân tộc Việt không biến thành người Trung Quốc. Trong cùng thời gian đó, các đế quốc Hán, Đường bành trướng, mở rộng gấp bốn lần. Quá trình đồng hóa mà Mạnh Tử gọi là "Dụng Hạ Biến Di" đã thành công; những sắc dân sống ở Hoa Nam nay đều tự nhận họ là gười Trung Hoa cả; mặc dù về chủng tộc, ngôn ngữ, họ vốn khác người phương Bắc mà có nhiều nét tương đồng hơn với các sắc tộc miền Đông Nam Á. Riêng dân tộc Việt Nam vẫn đứng riêng, dựng lên một quốc gia độc lập.

Hiện tượng văn hóa quan trọng nhất trong ngàn năm Bắc thuộc không phải là việc người Việt Nam học hỏi nền văn minh Trung Hoa. Nhiều dân tộc ở Á Đông cũng đều dùng chữ Hán, đều tổ chức đời sống đạo lý và chính trị theo khuôn mẫu Khổng Giáo, mặc dù họ không hề bị người Hán đô hộ. Điều đáng kể nhất trong thời Bắc thuộc là hiện tượng các di dân người Hoa sau nhiều thế hệ đã dần dần biến thành người Việt, nhiều người đã góp phần xây dựng văn hóa, tranh đấu và bảo vệ nền tự chủ của dân tộc Việt Nam.

Nhờ đâu người Việt Nam không mất gốc?

Cuốn sách này tìm hiểu những giả thuyết nhằm giải đáp mối thắc mắc đó. Các yếu tố như ngôn ngữ, chủng tộc, tín ngưỡng, vị trí địa dư, khí hậu, lịch sử, vân vân, từng được nêu lên để giải thích tại sao dân tộc Việt Nam không bị tiêu diệt. Mỗi giả thuyết có thể góp một phần vào câu trả lời chung, nhưng một giả thuyết đứng riêng thì không đủ để giải thích vì sao vẫn còn dân tộc Việt.

Cuối cùng, dân tộc Việt Nam vẫn tồn tại là nhờ quyết tâm tự lập và tự chủ của tổ tiên chúng ta. Nhớ lại công ơn tiền nhân, người Việt Nam sẽ vững lòng tin tưởng vào tương lai: Nước Việt Nam sẽ không bao giờ mất.

Astrology meets Mystery and Intrigue

As a professional astrologer, and great fan of Steven Forrests non-fiction work, I found this book thoroughly enjoyable. Gracefully and articulately he has combined the art/science of astrology authentically and convincingly with fictional mystery, and in a way that will be easily understandable even to someone with no astrological background. Through this his first novel Steven Forrest is, to my knowledge at least, the first person to ever apply astrology this creatively in a fictional context.
And the astrology is only one small aspect of the book, it has all of the ingredients necessary to keep the reader engaged. It is an entertaining, sensitive and humorous story, plus the psychological insights and undercurrents are profound and will be clear to all who are that way inclined.
I for one am looking forward to reading Steven Forrests next novel!

Murder Most Foul, Solved With Astrological Insights

There's a chill in the air, and it's not from the weather.
What if someone near and dear to you had been murdered and the main suspect was also someone near and dear to you? The police aren't likely to believe you, so your only hope is to catch the killer yourself, with a little help from a friend.
Steven Forrest turns in a fine debut novel in this page-turner of a mystery. And if you don't think astrology has any practical applications, you're in for a surprise...
The story hangs together well, and Forrest keeps things moving. He knows how to grab and hold a reader from the opening page to tne very end. If you're a murder mystery aficionado, buy this book -- you won't be disappointed.

Wow!

I just finished this book - or more accurately, this book grabbed both sides of my brain and galloped me off on this wild, roller coaster. There were many times I couldn't read fast enough. And simultaneous with that feeling, I wanted to save it for later because I didn't want it to end. If only it was 1,000 pages. But I couldn't pull away from the books engaging power and enchantment - responsibilities cast aside as pages kept turning. I don't recall being that absorbed and possesed by a book , though maybe some of Tom Robbins' stuff now that I think about it more. I can't wait until Steven Forrest's next novel. Bravo!

About the Author

R oger A. Freedman is a Lecturer in Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He was an undergraduate at the University of California campuses in San Diego and Los Angeles and did his doctoral research in nuclear theory at Stanford University under the direction of Professor J. Dirk Walecka. Dr. Freedman came to UCSB in 1981 after three years of teaching and doing research at the University of Washington.

At UCSB, Dr. Freedman has taught in both the Department of Physics and the College of Creative Studies, a branch of the university intended for highly gifted and motivated undergraduates. He has published research in nuclear physics, elementary particle physics, and laser physics. In recent years, he has worked to make physics lectures a more interactive experience through the use of classroom response systems and pre-lecture videos.

In the 1970s Dr. Freedman worked as a comic book letterer and helped organize the San Diego Comic-Con (now the world’s largest popular culture convention) during its first few years. Today, when not in the classroom or slaving over a computer, Dr. Freedman can be found either flying (he holds a commercial pilot’s license) or with his wife, Caroline, cheering on the rowers of UCSB Men’s and Women’s Crew.

IN MEMORIAM: HUGH YOUNG (1930—2013)

H ugh D. Young was Emeritus Professor of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University. He earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from that university. He earned his Ph.D. in fundamental particle theory under the direction of the late Richard Cutkosky. He joined the faculty of Carnegie Mellon in 1956 and retired in 2004. He also had two visiting professorships at the University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. Young’s career was centered entirely on undergraduate education. He wrote several undergraduate-level textbooks, and in 1973 he became a coauthor with Francis Sears and Mark Zemansky for their well-known introductory textbooks. In addition to his role on Sears and Zemansky’s University Physics, he was the author of Sears and Zemansky’s College Physics.

Dr. Young earned a bachelor’s degree in organ performance from Carnegie Mellon in 1972 and spent several years as Associate Organist at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Pittsburgh. He often ventured into the wilderness to hike, climb, or go caving with students in Carnegie Mellon's Explorers Club, which he founded as a graduate student and later advised. Dr. Young and his wife, Alice, hosted up to 50 students each year for Thanksgiving dinners in their home.

Always gracious, Dr. Young expressed his appreciation earnestly: “I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to my colleagues at Carnegie Mellon, especially Professors Robert Kraemer, Bruce Sherwood, Ruth Chabay, Helmut Vogel, and Brian Quinn, for many stimulating discussions about physics pedagogy and for their support and encouragement during the writing of several successive editions of this book. Aside from those in preceding chapters, a further 20 of the formation's 55 Knight's Cross holders are also detailed to include service data and all surviving award proposals, the latter incorporated into the text or as one of multiple extended photo captions. The remainder are included among both volumes as is data on other Waffen-SS units created with cadre from "Totenkopf."

Separate chapters follow on the divisional commanders and senior staff officers. Half the division's more than 100 German Cross in Gold recipients are individually detailed to include their careers outside of "Totenkopf" service, all surviving award proposals, and full explanations of these diverse assignments. Throughout the volume is new data on Waffen-SS schools, training units, and predecessors and successors as they pertain to the "Totenkopf" Division. Following a chapter on the Single-handed Tank Destruction award is another detailing rare surviving award documents and similar material contributed by collections in Europe, Russia, and the United States.

Having written several books on specific Russian front battles, my interest in the classic Waffen SS and German Army divisions on the Eastern Front is considerable. One of the best known of the SS divisions, which was involved in many of the most famous battles in Russia, was the 3.SS-Panzer Division "Totenkopf." Starting with the first campaign in Russia, its enviable combat record, especially during defensive operations, was reinforced by further offensive successes during the battles for Kharkov and Kursk, as well as other combat operations when it was often far under-strength due to combat attrition. Army commanders of the period who had "Totenkopf" subordinated to their command spoke highly of the division, with Field Marshal von Manstein describing it as the best of the Waffen SS divisions.  However, books on “Totenkopf,” even after almost three-quarters of a century, have repeated many past errors, incorrect assumptions or show a lack of competent research. Authors willing to expend the requisite time, effort, and expenditure in careful research to guarantee accuracy are rare, while superficial, redundant or quickly written commercial books typify the vast majority of current day releases.   Mark C. Yerger is a prolific biographical researcher on the Waffen-SS with an earned reputation for presenting great detail and carefully researched factual works that are without bias. He has been the first or only researcher to write on a number of specific topics, in great detail that deal with the Waffen SS, its commanders and personnel. The amount of information found in Yerger’s nine volumes on SS German Cross recipients published by R. James Bender Publishing has not been equaled or even attempted for any other part of Germany's military. He has produced a series of books with a more complete body of information than any other comparable works, such as the many volumes about Knight's Cross holders that are available. Yerger’s book are a source of personnel information, organizational structure and personal battlefield exploits of Waffen SS soldiers which I have incorporated into my own books.  However, having read the first volume of his "Totenkopf" trilogy I honestly believe he has peaked as a Waffen-SS historian. Although he has written about various topics on nearly all the classic Waffen-SS combat units since the 1980s, I doubt that he can exceed the level of detailed information found in his “Totenkopf” trilogy.  After a lengthy introduction, a "Commanders and Award Holders" chapter details the parameters of this comprehensive, detailed study of the personalities, organization and history of the division and provides a large amount of related information. A history of the four prewar units of the Totenkopfverbände, which were combined along with other Waffen-SS units, trained officers, and required support troops to create the division in 1939 is also provided.  There is a section describing the early concentration camps, their creation, and the progression of the system up until the division was organized as a combat formation. However, the book is about the "Totenkopf" Division as a divisional combat unit that fought on the Eastern Front from 1941 to the end of the war. It was never withdrawn for rebuilds like the other “classic” Waffen SS divisions, such as “Das Reich,” “Leibstandarte,” and “Wiking.” Therefore it remained on the front and was not involved as a unit in the administration of the camp system. Anyone interested in Holocaust topics will need to look elsewhere, although sources for additional reading are provided.  There is a short chapter that shows uniquely rare surviving artifacts of these pre-war units combined with period pictures that are extremely rare. There is an additional summary of the division's combat operations, including an analysis of its losses during various periods, and a review of the divisional Knight's Cross recipients during the periods discussed.  Yerger has greatly expanded the amount of Combat Elements coverage from the information found in the German Cross series. Over 100 pages describing the 13 fighting components of the division. Also included is career information for all commanders, initial staff, and “Totenkopf” Knight's Cross holders. The Knight’s Cross winners have their lengthy combat service history described with multiple, extremely detailed image captions that incorporate their surviving award proposals. Finding copies of these documents or tremendously rare originals for this many men of a division is a research triumph that only those who have studied thousands of pages of German records can even begin to appreciate.  Nearly a hundred pages follow of biographies and other information and service records of the division commanders and "Totenkopf" First Staff Officers, this information being completely presented for the first time. Another 150 pages is devoted to the first half of "Totenkopf" men awarded the German Cross in Gold with all available surviving award texts to include those of Enlisted and NCO ranks which are the most unbelievably difficult documents to find. Volume I concludes with a list of Single-handed Tank Destruction Award recipients and an original documents section which describes the procedure involved in granting awards.  While the text is the heart of the book, the incredible collection of images are clear, and large with long, informative captions, and most are unpublished. These pictures are of many personnel that I've written about for years but had never seen pictures of. Along with the normal bibliography, glossary, etc Yerger has included a name index that is essential for the 600+ men included.  The first two volumes of this planned trilogy will cover the history, organization and personnel of the division who were awarded the Cross in Gold. Yerger’s his long-time friend, fellow researcher and colleague, Ignacio Arrondo, will present the history of the nearly 20 Totenkopfstandarten in volume III. Yerger’s high opinion of Arrondo’s abilities leave me no doubt that volume III with be as detailed and complete as the first two books. This work and the following volumes are extremely highly recommended.

This book, the first volume of three, is an outstanding book packed with important information and excellent photographic material as well as award documentation relevant to the personalities of this unique combat unit. If one has an interest in the Third Reich, Eastern Front and the SS in general you must obtain and read this book. It is an extremely well researched divisional history based on the structure, development and personalities of the Totenkopf Division. This volume and no doubt the future two volumes will fill an important void in the history of the Second World War. The author(s) and publisher (Helion) are to be congratulated and thanked in making this book available. My high expectations for the book have been exceeded now that I have completed reading it. The End Notes in itself almost justify a separate volume and reflects the absolute thorough research of this book.

About the Author
Kim Malchuk has called Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada home for almost 50 years. She is the youngest of seven children (five girls and two boys). Being raised in a dysfunctional, fearful home environment, by an unbalanced single-mother, childhood memories were not happy ones for Kim. She is thankful for being the last born and states that had it not been for the love and protection her older siblings provided her, she is not sure where she would be today. As a young child, something told her that life was better than what was being offered to her and held on to that hope that adult life would be happier. Kim s education and professional career never prepared her for the journey that she now finds herself on as a writer, as a story-teller, and shining as the motivational speaker she truly is. Will you stop to taste the rain? The choice is yours.

Remember the innocence of childhood and simpler times? Making snow angels, catching fireflies, running through the lawn sprinkler? Searching for animal shapes in the clouds, chasing butterflies, blowing dandelion fuzz into the wind? How about sticking your tongue out and Tasting Rain?

Kim Malchuk is a storyteller...and what a storyteller she is! Malchuk has quite an inspiring story to share. "Tasting Rain" is a story of soul mates. It is a journey of devoted love, heartbreaking loss, brokenness, courage, strength, perseverance, healing, and tears that fell like rain. Along this journey, we are encouraged to stop and smell the roses. When we take the time to notice the little miracles that had been previously overlooked, we will be amazed at the gifts we receive ~ like a single white feather falling gracefully to the ground out of the clear, blue sky.

As readers turn over the final page, they will find that Malchuk's story is one of triumph, absolute surrender, the resiliency of the human spirit and life's lessons learned. If you have ever experienced personal loss whether it be the loss of a loved one or simply the loss of your dreams, you have most assuredly felt like you were literally at the end of your rope. The devastation and confusion, loneliness and grief all seem to suck the life right out of you. Questions like "Why did this happen to me?", "What am I supposed to do now?", and maybe even "Does God hate me?" seem to be never-ending thoughts that cross our minds.

In Kim Malchuk's book "Tasting Rain", we are told a story of sadness and loss, hurt and frustration. Malchuk shares her thoughts and her story in such a way that makes one feel as though she is speaking directly to them. We are privy to her thoughts and feelings as she faces a journey many of us pray we never have to endure. Her heartache, perseverance, and ultimate joy for life are truly an inspiration to readers.

The common theme for Malchuk is optimism and positive thinking. Life is all about choices. Choosing to live your life to the fullest each day no matter what obstacles you may face will lead you to a life of happiness and joy. Life is hard. It is not perfect.
