Shamsher Bahadur Singh has 25 years of teaching and research experience, including a postdoctoral fellowship in the U.S.. His area of specialization is in structural engineering with composite structure as a major area. Dr. Singh is the reviewer of many prestigious journals such as the ASCE Journal of Composites for Construction, International Journal of Earth Science and Engineer, ACI Structural Journal, IJE, and the Journal of Korean Society of Civil Engineering. Great, but not perfect.

This is an extremely information-dense book; as a survey of literary criticism, it's all you could ask for. From Marxism to Feminism to Deconstruction, each literary theory is explained quite thoroughly, and its key theorists are introduced. And for good measure, the author throws a little humor in here and there (which is nice; it breaks up the monotony a bit).

Really, my only complaint with the book is that as an INTRODUCTION to literature, it's hard to jump into. The author doesn't go to a lot of trouble to thoroughly define some of the terminology. I found myself doing a lot of re-reading.

While I did like this book and would definitely give it a good rating, my recommendation is to have a literary glossary, such as the Bedford Glossary of Literary Terms, handy when tackling it; otherwise, you might find yourself overwhelmed with barely-explained terms and, like me, get stuck in the re-reading loop.

Recommended for its Clarity and Quality

This book is an informative survey in critical theory. It's incredibly accessible, but if you want to dig deeper into the concepts, there's plenty of material there. If you're an programmer considering taking an English course, know that this book is to criticism as K&R is to C. It's that good. :) I'll be using is as a desktop reference for all future work in English.

Way above the competition

This is by far the best introduction to literary theory for college students. Very clear and accessible, with lots of good examples. Highly recommended for any English student thinking about Grad school or who just wants to be knowledgeable for upper level classes. Of course it needs to be supplemented by primary theoretical texts by the leading theorists, but this book is really the best starting place available, and even students who already have some knowledge will benefit from the clear and detailed analyses of the major theories and theorists. As an English professor, I used to assign Literary Theory: The Basics by Hans Bertens (still a useful text, especially for its historical narrative of theory in English studies), but I now find this text by Parker to be far superior.

About the Author
Larry J. Siegel was born in the Bronx in 1947. While living on Jerome Avenue and attending City College of New York (CCNY) in the 1960s, he was swept up in the social and political currents of the time. He became intrigued with the influence contemporary culture had on individual behavior: Did people shape society, or did society shape people? He applied his interest in social forces and human behavior to the study of crime and justice. After graduating from CCNY, he attended the newly opened program in criminal justice at the State University of New York at Albany, earning both his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees there. After completing his graduate work, Dr. Siegel began his teaching career at Northeastern University and has also held teaching positions at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire, and in the School of Criminology and Justice Studies at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell (UML). Now a Professor Emeritus, he continues to teach courses on criminology and criminal justice in UML'S online master's degree program. Dr. Siegel has written extensively in the area of crime and justice, including books on juvenile law, delinquency, criminology, corrections, criminal justice, and criminal procedure. He is a court-certified expert on police conduct and has testified in numerous legal cases.

John L. Worrall is Professor of Criminology at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). A Seattle native, he received a B.A., double majoring in psychology and law and justice, from Central Washington University in 1994. Both his M.A. (criminal justice) and Ph.D. (political science) were received from Washington State University, where he graduated in 1999. From 1999-2006, he was a member of the criminal justice faculty at California State University, San Bernardino. He joined UTD in Fall 2006, was promoted to full professor in 2008, and in 2010 was selected to direct the criminology program, a position he held until 2015. He now directs UTD's executive M.S. program in Justice Administration and Leadership. Dr. Worrall has published articles and book chapters on a variety of topics ranging from legal issues in policing to crime measurement, having recently been ranked one of the most prolific sole and lead authors in the discipline. Courses he regularly teaches (and has authored texts for) include introductory criminal justice, criminal procedure, and crime control policy. Dr. Worrall is active in the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, the American Society of Criminology, and a number of regional associations. He regularly works with local criminal justice agencies on evaluation projects and continues to serve as editor of the journal Police Quarterly.

This is the best undergrad Law and Justice textbook!

I got to rent a brand new book, and it is a fantastic read. The text is condensed from its original version, and now includes cases less than a year old. The authors have made it comprehensive and attractive to read. I recommend it in any media, but the hardback is unbeatable. I'm impressed with the delivery and the modest rental price, the added features like cite links, the manageability of the content, the pictures and charts, and the additional reading opportunities and links for even more features for students. This is a 5 star upgrade edition. I'll probably buy it for its requisite nature going forward in my law degree.

the condition of this book was excellent, I didn't expect this quality for a rented book. My school doesn't even offer the book in this condition unless you buy it new. The book was cheaper on amazom than anywhere on the web and I really researched my books for the best savings

Someone's read too much Kristen Ashley...

The book was ok, yet unoriginal and needed an editor or a better one.

I recommend the author get her own voice vs borrowing someone else's. Kristen Ashley has a huge following and a very unique voice in her stories - and from the heroine to the hero to the setting in the small town you used it. The heroine's constant inner monologue and endearments for hero and his son. The hero's inability to form complete sentences and "alpha" personality. Most stories have a similar plot but it's always very obvious when the voice is the same.

I would give it 3 stars, but I can't considering how much the author ripped off KA.

Overwhelming pain, agony and betrayal are the focus for the main characters in this beautifully written and well developed novel by Julia Goda. In Ms. Goda’s debut novel, we are introduced to Ivey and Cal, two souls that find a way to heal each other. They are bent but not broken and will work together to find their HEA.

Ivey Jones spent her early childhood watching her father beat her mother and then rape her repeatedly. When her mother checked out mentally, he turned his fist and punishment to her! Ivey finally escaped after high school and moved away to go to college. Free at last to be herself she lets her guard down and once more evil almost destroys her. Escaping once again from a brutal, abusive man she puts her past behind and strikes out for a new beginning.

Ivey drives half way across the country until she comes to a small rocky mountain community. The peace that she finds causes her to stay and put down roots. She has always wanted to own a bookstore and it seemed like fate when she saw the lease sign on the door. Ivy buys a home and opens a business, a bookstore called Serendipity. For nine years she has lived with walls built around her heart and soul, keeping the past in the past and not letting anyone inside. Everything changes when Cal stakes his claim!

Cal is a single father with a son that loves to visit Ivey’s bookstore. Since the first day he had laid eyes on her, he knew that he wanted more. But he had his own problems to deal with and felt like it would be a burden for Ivey to take on a ready-made family. She was beautiful, too good and didn’t need a man like him with all of his baggage. A man can only deny what he needs for so long and then he will do whatever it takes to claim his woman. It was time to claim Ivey.

Sometimes the past refuses to stay in the past and you can never really get away from it. Ivey’s past has come to collect and will destroy anything in its path to get what it wants!

Would I recommend this book: Yes! This book is a romance filled with kinks and suspense that will keep the reader asking what will happen next. It has a hot hunky alpha male and a beautiful feisty heroine that will make you laugh and cry at the same time as they work together to find their HEA.

Would I recommend this author: Yes! Ms. Goda writes with heart, humor and a sense of what makes the world go round. Her characters are created with this same sense of love and laughter.

Overall Opinion: This definitely had a Kristen Ashley feel. I don't think it quite made it there though. I thought the H was very similar to a KA hero as well as the small towns setting with good supporting characters, but there were some major issues with the pacing that I never get with KA (see below pacing section for specifics). I really had issues with the major drama being at 90% and then we get an epilogue. I hate that! We need some happy times between the drama and the epilogue IMO! Overall with the pacing issues and all the skimming I did, I would rate it "just ok" 3 stars.

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Ivey and Cal's story. Ivey moved to the small town and opened a bookstore 9 years prior to the story to get away from a bad memory of being beaten up and almost killed by her ex. Cal has always been aware of Ivey, but never made a move because he didn't want to stick her with a single Dad. One day, Cal decides that enough is enough and starts to strongly pursue her. There are some issues with her past demons that they have to face, some sexy times, some sweet moments, and some drama...but they get their HEA ending.

POV: This alternated between Ivey's POV and 3rd person POV focusing on Cal (kind of odd IMO).

Overall Pace of Story: Not so great -- and my biggest complaint. I did have issues with the overly extensive inner dialogue. I felt like there were some chapters that I even could've gone without and it wouldn't have taken away from the story. I skimmed a good bit (especially between the interactions of the h and H), and I don't feel like I missed anything. The ending was too abrupt for me too.

Instalove: Yes. This was all over a not so long period of time, so I'd say it was instalove. It didn't feel like the type to make me annoyed though.

H rating: 3.5 stars. Cal. I just wanted him to communicate better! He really reminded me of a KA alpha in that he didn't let the h push him away when he had made up his mind that she was his. I also really liked his relationship with his son.

I personally didn't, because I understood her pushing the H away and I felt like she gave in pretty easily after he pursued her. I wouldn't say I loved her either. I did have issues with her being cold when she erected her walls at times.

About the Author
Frank K. Reilly, a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), is the Bernard J. Hank Professor of Finance, Mendoza College of Business, University of Notre Dame, where he served as dean from 1981-1987. Prior to 1981, Dr. Reilly was a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of Wyoming, and the University of Kansas. Recently, he was part of the inaugural group selected as a fellow of the Financial Management Association International. At the 2001 AIMR annual meeting in Los Angeles, he received the Daniel J. Forrestal III Leadership Award for Professional Ethics and Standards of Investment Practice. Among his other honors, Professor Reilly was included in the list of Outstanding Educators in America, received the Alumni Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award and the Outstanding Educator Award from the M.B.A. class at the University of Illinois, the Outstanding Teachers Award from the M.B.A. class at the University of Notre Dame, and the Faculty Award from the University of Notre Dame. He received his B.B.A. at the University of Notre Dame, his M.B.A. at Northwestern University, and his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago.

Keith C. Brown, a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), is the Jack S. Josey Professor, University Distinguished Teaching Professor, and Fayez Sarofim Fellow at the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin, where he teaches Investments, Portfolio Management and Security Analysis, Capital Markets, and Derivatives courses at the BBA and MBA levels. He is president and CEO of The MBA Investment Fund, LLC, a private capital appreciation fund managed by UT graduate students, and the former director of the department's Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst Center for Private Equity Finance. Professor Brown is cofounder and senior partner of Fulcrum Financial Group, a portfolio management and investment advisory firm located in Austin, Texas, and Las Vegas, Nevada. He serves as an advisor to the boards of the Teacher Retirement System of Texas and the University of Texas Investment Management Company. He is an associate editor for the JOURNAL OF INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT and the JOURNAL OF BEHAVIORAL FINANCE. He received his B.A. from San Diego State University and his M.S. and Ph.D. from Purdue University.

Not my favorite textbook

This textbook, although filled with a lot of useful information, has questions and problems that are not explained in the body of the text. I have had to reference other textbooks and internet articles to complete problems from this book, as there are no examples or standards on how to complete certain problems. I wish there were more examples available. That said, it was a required textbook for a class and I had no choice but to purchase it. If I were a teacher, however, I would not select this text for my students.

Circuitous route to the point.

The main points of the text are dispersed throughout a litany of fluff. The form of presentation of the material is not straight forward; I feel like every chapter requires me to dig through words in order to find the pertinent and applicable facts. I've read through chapter 16 and honestly believe the same amount of information could have been presented in 8 chapters. This is really frustrating when time is so priceless in grad school.

As a comparison, "Investments" by Sharpe (1998) was a perfectly written book on the topic. I use it now to fill in the gaps created by this miserable read.

I had no choice as this book was required for a class, but I would never recommend it as a voluntary purchase.

This is one of the worst textbooks I've ever had to use. Material is poorly organized and chapters are not laid out in a coherent and organized manner. Major formulas are difficult to find.
