life affirming

This is one of those books you will want to buy for yourself and give away again and again.
Part theology, part memoir Padraig sprinkles hope throughout the book and leaves us wanting to be more courageous, more kind, more generous, more understanding, more human.

Hello to waking up! I loved this book.....

A beautiful and thoughtful book--an engaging mixture of story, memoir, theology, poetry, prayer, musing on the meaning of language and of life. The author shares his struggles as a man who has often not felt at home in much of the world, because he happens to be gay. But this is not a book about sexuality--this is a book about life and how to live it--for everyone regardless of sexual orientation. Even though I don't know him, his vulnerability in expressing what it felt like to be excluded and marginalized made me wish not just to be more "tolerant" of others, but to reach out and embrace and include. A few days after finishing the book, I find myself once again scanning its pages. I will definitely reread it again in its entirety--soon. I'm also ordering his others!

Finding myself at home in this book

I find myself at home in O'Tuama's words in a way that is hard to fully articulate. His kindness, his grace, his willingness to journey into the places many of us avoid (grief, suffering, Jesus' humanity)– it comes together in a book that at times feels like an extended conversation with a theologian and poet over coffee. His ability to interpret the Biblical text with fresh questions has created space for me to see my human world through the lens of the scripture in a way I have been longing for. I have reconnected with Jesus through this work, as O'Tuama artfully invites questions about Jesus' humanity, character, and experience on earth. "In the Shelter" proclaims the just love of God and provides so much room to breathe as a human seeking connection with God.
