The Haydock Bible is a larger-print (12 point) format Douay-Rheims Catholic Bible with a comprehensive Catholic commentary and an illustrated Catholic Bible Dictionary and History of the Books of Holy Scripture reproduced from the 1859 edition of Fr. Haydock, whose superb explanations and commentary take up about one-half to two-thirds of each page. The commentary is drawn largely from the Fathers and Doctors of the Church which is absolutely invaluable. The *BEST* Catholic Bible ever!

This is really a significant Catholic Bible, for any English speaking Christian. The notes, which are complete and unabridged, by Fr. Geo. L. Haydock, are only in print in this one Bible. No where else can you find a complete Haydock Bible, except by buying an original 19th century Victorian Bible costing many hundreds of dollars minimum! Some few of the Haydock notes may have a Catholic apologetic slant, but still are accurate and truthful and never insulting or prejudiced. This Bible is basically an exact facsimile of the 1859 Dunigan Haydock Quarto, but the TEXT is not shrunken at all! What has been done, is the original bible's page, which had a ruled margin around every page of text, and margins outside of that, have been cut off. So they shrunk the page, but NOT the text which includes the Scripture text and all of the notes. The type is darker (almost like a boldface) compared to the original font. This may have been to enhance the readability of the page. Let me also mention that I have the 1852 Dunigan Haydock Quarto to compare this bible to. The 1852 and 1859 Bibles were textually and typographically identical although they differed in the illustrations and extra matter included.

I am very impressed at how they used the advantage of good modern Bible paper which is thin, light and reasonably opaque to shrink down the thickness and heaviness of the original Haydock Bible from its ponderous 20 lbs. to just 5.9 lbs. (this does not agree with the shipping weight specified by Amazon.) And from a thickness of 4-1/4" to 2-1/4" (again this is not what the Amazon dimensions specify.) The length and width of the bible is also slightly larger than what Amazon claims. I have included some pictures to help with the textual size and readability. I am 65 and I have no trouble whatever with reading the smaller size font of the notes. There is no blurriness at all (as one mentioned) and is rather sharp and clear. In fact, I don't think the readability could have been improved upon. This is nothing like those facsimile reprints of old books that are horrible and difficult to read. This is a true Haydock Bible edition, even if it is a facsimile reprint, which includes a red ribbon bookmark.

This bible ALSO includes ALL of the extra matter that the original 1859 Dunigan Quarto contained. The edition that I received is the 2014 memorial edition. The preliminary matter includes all of the original illustrations, Title pages, Loreto Publications dedication, Approbation list of Bishops that approved the 1859 Haydock edition, A very worthwhile Preface by the noted modern Catholic Biblical scholar and bibliographer, Sidney K. Ohlhausen, Admonition, Decree of the Council of Trent, Principal Epochs, A list of principal commentators referred to in the Haydock notes, Table of Scripture weight and measures, Table of Scripture Time, Advertisement and Catalog of Sacred Books, Original Preface, A Table of the Epistles and Gospels, then begins the Book of Genesis! Whew! Facsimiles of the original full page plates are also included at their usual place within the text, and just as in the original, they are blank on the backside. After the last page of II Machabees, there is a historical and chronological index to the Old Testament, a page of ads from Loreto publications, and on special heavy paper for writing, facsimiles of the original Family pages for Births, Marriages, Deaths, plus a bonus of three extra pages of "Our Family History" pages which are all blank. Then begins the New Testament Title page, both the engraved and letterpress versions, General Preface to the New Testament, Dr. Witham's remarks to the Reader, after which begins the Gospel of Matthew to Apocalypse. Then An Historical and Chronological Index to the New Testament, a Useful Table of References, An Illustrated and Comprehensive Catholic bible Dictionary, which is 128 pages, and heavily illustrated, A comprehensive History of the Books of the Holy Catholic Bible by Rev. Bernard O'Reilly which is 56 pages, and also heavily illustrated.
You won't find a bible more helpful and explanatory than this one today! Even a modern study Bible rarely includes this much matter! It's true, modern discoveries have perhaps clarified some things better than this 150 yr. old Bible. But for the ordinary Christian reader, who wants the Sacred Scripture, based on the trusty Latin Vulgate, with classic traditional Catholic teaching, and interpretation, this Bible is unequaled!

This is a real gem and I mean the pearl of great price kind of a gem. If you're a traditionalist like me and are tired of the modern translations with inclusive and gender neutral languages then look no further. When I first received the Bible I was impressed with the quality of the binding, the printing, and the exhaustive commentary, bible index, and church history and the history of all the books of the Bible. As a Catholic convert from protestantism I have to admit this out does any study Bibles I know of and that says a lot. As I read some of the reviews yes this Bible is kind of pricey but just remember that you get what you pay for and it's not like you're paying for a Cambridge Bible with no content and just a calf skin cover what I like to call the Mercedes Benz of the Bibles. Just a side note, the commentary notes are small so if you use large print to see things it may present a challenge for you to make out the notes. Anyways, it's very well worth the money and you definitely won't regret it.

This version is a blessing.

After contacting the Seller, I am satisfied with this purchase. It's a little odd why the Publisher put page 12 on a different page (3 pages back), but they did. I am confident that the rest of the entire Bible is intact and in order. I thank the Seller for contacting the Publisher and finding out what happened to that missing page 12 on the Preface (which wasn't missing). The Haydock Bible, especially this print, is so satisfying because of the painstakingly profuse notes by Father Haydock.
