About the Author
Gary L. Friedman is a professional photographer who has travel the world with his cameras and runs the stock image website Friedman Archives dot com. He has also written several highly-acclaimed e-books on digital imaging, all aimed at demystifying the complexities of digital cameras. His photography and writing has been published in magazines, newspapers, and books worldwide, and he was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for building the world's smallest telephone way back in 1980 (before cell phones or cordless phones were around). Before graduating to photography he was a rocket scientist for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he patented the image authentication system now used in high-end digital cameras from Canon and Nikon, and published the book "Control the World with HP-IL", a technical book showing how to interface Hewlett Packard handheld calculators (like the HP-41C and HP-71B; the most powerful handheld computers on earth) to the outside world. Frustrated with the inability to commercialize his patents, he left JPL after 10 years to learn how to run a business. He founded E2 Solutions, an Information Technology Consulting firm and grew it from 1 person and 1 telephone to a $10M/yr firm and 22 employees within three years. A tour of duty with a dot-com followed. We all know what happened after that. :-) Gary's best-known works are the 1988 "Peace Child in Latvia:, a photojournalistic documentary about a historic exchange between Soviet and American high-school student back in the days of the cold war, and his 2003 China Blog about his adventures teaching English in China and trying to start Yet Another Business. Gary keeps busy now with photo assignments, image licensing, writing books, and acting as a distributor for a most unique musical instrument called a Xaphoon. In his spare time (Ha!) he is traveling the world offering beginning photography seminars to any city that wants it, and orchestrating worldwide photo expeditions geared to the unique needs of photographers.

You NEED this book!

If you own a Sony A500 or A550, definitely buy this book. You've paid not a trivial amount for a great camera, so fork out a little more to get an outstanding book that will help you fully understand every function and when and how to employ it.
The book is available in three formats--pdf (e-book), B&W, and color. I bought the pdf version, because it was the cheapest, but it's so good that I am going to purchase the B&W too, just to have a hard copy. Friedman's website has info on the other formats. I can see how the B&W would be something of a frustration, but since I already have color in the pdf, I won't be missing anything. Somewhere on his site I thought I read that you can have access to the colored pictures in the book via the website if you've bought the B&W version.
I had originally bought David Taylor's book on the A550, solely because I am a cheapskate, and I've posted a review on that one also. It's a waste of money. Friedman's book is light years better. I don't think it's possible to improve on this book. It's written in a very easy-to-read style, without being too simple or too complex. He includes many photos to illustrate his points, including very helpful comparative photos. The sections on DRO and HDR are a great example of this, wherein he covers both functions extensively and then compares the two functions with each other, for a total of 14 pages. Compare that to Taylor's one page total for both functions combined. I could give you so many more examples.
While Friedman is obviously a fan of Sony dSLR's, clearly he does not work for Sony, as he also covers the (very few) design flaws of this camera--very helpful to know and not easy to find elsewhere.
Yes, this book is expensive (except for the pdf format), but it is worth every cent. I found much info that would be helpful for any dSLR camera make, but having all of it specific to my very camera makes this publication gold.

So easy to read, TONS of information!!

Okay, this book is so extensive. I have not made it through the whole book yet, just hit or miss parts I found I needed for a particular situation. I like the fact that it has step-by-step instructions for each feature discussed and how to use that feature. The only thing I would like to see happen is getting this book for the price I paid for it with COLOR pictures for when we are asked to look at the comparison shots side by side which are in black and white and reference text states a "color". Besides that little detail, the book is very informative, easy to read, and I am learning so much. Would definitely recommend it for anybody wanting to learn how to operate the different features offered on these cameras. I've decided why spend that kind of money on a camera and not learn how to REALLY use it.

Great Book, Get the Color Edition

This is a great book, it tells you all about the Sony Alpha 550. It is easy to read and covers all aspects of the camera. However it should never have been put out as a B&W (Black & White) edition. There are example photos in the book showing the difference in using or not using a certain option that you can not see any difference between the pictures. Get the color edition, although I could not find it on Amazon.
